Job Description

Position Summary

The Instruction Reference & Research Support Librarian has the primary goal of meeting the information needs of CUW students as they participate in the Universitys programs of study in pursuit of Christian education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Library works together with the faculty and administration to select acquire and make available materials resources and services consistent with fulfilling the Universitys mission of providing excellence in Christian education.

The Instruction Reference & Research Support Librarian working in close collaboration with the director is charged with having the educational research and informational needs of the Concordia University Wisconsin community more conveniently and thoroughly met through the innovative application of current and emerging technologies. Inherent in this position is the creative leveraging of technological trends to augment library instruction access and overall user experience. This includes but is not limited to the targeting creating implementing and maintaining of a variety of webbased interactive tools/applications content tutorials & learning objects; traditional and online reference services; research assistance throughout our extended academic community; the development and delivering of a highquality library instruction program that is in keeping with the best of current standards & trends; outreach promotion and assessment of the librarys programs and services relative to research needs & user experience.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning development implementation and evaluation of the librarys information literacy initiatives instructional programs orientation / tours both inclassroom and/or virtually using technology that may include course management systems web conferencing systems audience response systems mobile devices podcasts etc.
  • Provide creative leadership in the design development and incorporation of relevant current and emerging technologies webbased tools and resources to enhance reference services and information literacy instruction both on and offcampus with an added emphasis on userexperience;
  • Design teach and assess/report on courserelated library instruction/information literacy sessions; conduct tours and develop workshops and programming focused on the library and its resources for students faculty and other groups and accordingly serve as contact and coordinator for them (occasional trips to our Ann Arbor MI campus might be necessary);
  • Prepare and maintain print and webbased content orientations tutorials learning objects and other online services for library users;
  • Provide outreach services to international firstyear returning graduate and/or nontraditional & virtual students thereby enabling their effective use and evaluation of library and information resources;
  • Perform general reference duties including evening and weekend rotations assisting both facetoface and virtual/remote users with gaining access to
  • needed information resources via the appropriate technological means whenever possible;
  • Provide indepth and ondemand research consultations for individuals and small groups.
  • Actively investigate innovatively experiment with and implement current and emerging tools technologies applications and methods to increase accessibility and augment the usability of electronic resources reference services library programs / initiatives and the entire online experience of CUW library users;
  • Recommend develop and promote complimentary digital services that are appropriately in keeping with best practices and currently emerging trends;
  • Create and maintain webbased sites via new or developing platforms / tools and facilitate enhancements i.e. various customizations specialized widgets etc.;
  • Foster strategic relationships with campus colleagues faculty departments and/or programs with a shared commitment toward the development and design of support services targeting student success;
  • Assist instructors and/or instructional designers with selecting library resources for course use and obtaining permalinks.
  • Market and promote library resources and services; and solicit input and conduct assessment pertinent to such programs services and resource support;
  • Serve on library consortium and/or university committees at the discretion of the director;
  • Maintain positive effective and appropriate communication with the director as well as coworkers students faculty and the general community;
  • Various other related duties projects and/or committee work may be assigned at the discretion of the library director.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Fulfillment of the purposes of this position necessitates administrative supervisory and trained capabilities in the following areas:

  • Knowledge and skills in computer software and hardware that facilitate the operational component of his his/her tasks such as word processors spreadsheets relational databases multimedia software email web browsers etc.
  • Knowledge and skills with content management systems (preferably WordPress); learning management systems (preferably Blackboard) and reference management software
  • Excellent teaching presentation interpersonal and written / oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability in the area of public service and use of library reference technologies including library OPAC operation and protocols;
  • Ability to work either independently or collaboratively with others and lead projects to completion;
  • Strong interest in knowledge of and experience in assessing user needs;
  • Intrigued by the possible library uses of social software and/or virtualimmersive communities;
  • Familiarity with a broad range of electronic and print information sources;
  • Familiarity with technology as it relates to information services and the ability to adapt to a dynamic and changing environment;
  • Professional development and personal competencies as they pertain to the academic library work environment.
  • Supportive of the mission and values of Concordia University Wisconsin/Ann Arbor and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS)

Education and Experience

Requirements:

  • ALA accredited Masters degree in Library and Information Science or related
  • Teaching training presentation and/or instructional experience (academic setting preferred)
  • Expertise and proficiencies in web development / design; or the equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of current standards best practices tools and applications relative to both library instruction and web development/design
  • Demonstrated expertise in Web 2.0 technologies / social media and their potential educational applications and familiarity with current and emerging Web applications relative to libraries
  • Experience using active learning techniques to teach information literacy concepts and skills coupled with the ability to make innovative use of new technologies relative to library instruction learning management systems and userexperience
  • Familiarity with current copyright and fair use laws and guidelines
  • Current online ereference experience using a variety of electronic resources (academic setting preferred)
  • Working familiarity with ExLibris AlmaPrimo is a plus

Compensation and Benefits

This is a fulltime nonexempt (hourly) staff position. The starting wage is dependent upon individual qualifications and experience. Concordia University benefit options include but are not limited to the following:
