The Contra Costa Health Department is offering excellent career opportunities for qualified individuals interested in the Senior Health Education Specialist position. There is currently one (1) vacancy in the Family Maternal and Child Health (FMCH) located in Concord CA.


Senior Health Education Specialists assist with implementation of educational and health promotion activities for the department; assumes responsibility for educational aspects of assigned department programs; and performs related work as required. Lived experience is considered to be an asset to this position and bilingual candidates are highly sought after.


Family Maternal and Child Health (FMCH) is dedicated to promoting the health and wellbeing of families and children through innovative partnerships with families community members county programs and communitybased organizations. To accomplish this mission our work involves collecting and analyzing data to identify high priority needs develop implement and evaluate programs designed to improve health outcomes and provide training and technical assistance to groups throughout the county on issues of perinatal health to black mothers.

  • Planning developing and executing stakeholder and public education outreach material and programs for assigned program area(s)

  • Conduct needs assessments and prepare reports and recommendations on community health needs and services available
  • Develop recruit and cofacilitate various workgroups

Minimum Qualifications

License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operators License. Outofstate valid motor vehicle operators license will be accepted during the application process.

Education: Possession of a Masters Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Public Health Health Services Administration Social Work Health Education Education Sports Medicine Kinesiology Nutrition or a closely related field.

Experience: One (1) year of fulltime or its equivalent experience which included direct responsibility for performing health promotion health prevention or community health education work.

Substitution for Education:A Bachelors Degree and two (2) years of fulltime or its equivalent experience in a health services agency or program performing health promotion health prevention or health education work may be substituted for the Masters Degree. No substitution is permitted for a Bachelors Degree.

Positions which function as health educators pursuant to Section 1303 of Title 17 of the California Administrative Code must possess a Masters Degree in Public Health with specialization in health education obtained in a program of study approved by the American Public Health Association.


Selection Process

  1. Application Filing and Evaluation: All applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application. Applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
  2. Virtual Oral Assessment:Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an online video assessment. The assessment will measure candidates competencies as they relate to the job. In the assessment candidates must achieve an average passing score of 70% or higher on each of the competencies as well as an overall passing score of 70% or higher. These may include but are not limited to: Delivering Results Innovative Problem Solving Displaying Ownership & Accountability Oral Communication and Handling & Resolving Conflict (Weighted 100%).


The Virtual Oral Assessment is tentatively scheduled to take place via computer (remotely) during the week of May 28 2025.


The Virtual Oral Assessment will be administered remotely using a computer or mobile device such as a tablet or smartphone. You will need access to a reliable internet connection to take the assessment as well as a computer or mobile device with a camera.


The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER

All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Workerrelated training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
