Indigenous Academic Success Teacher Job Summary
This is a specialized teaching position that combines Indigenous ways of knowing with academic supports for Indigenous students.
The primary responsibility of this position is to deliver academic support to students: liaising with schoolbased staff including teachers counsellors and administration; SD8 Indigenous Education employees and the Director of Instruction of Indigenous Education and Learning Services; and community service supports. The work is guided by both SD8s Indigenous Education goals and education agreements that outline the delivery of educational programs and services to nominal roll students.
The Academic Success teacher will work in small groups as well as in full classrooms in a pushin model. At the secondary school level the Academic Success teacher will track a range of data: attendance passing/failing of academic courses grad planning and postsecondary planning for each student grades 1012; this tracking would be in collaboration with the school counselling department. Based upon tracking followup plans will be communicated developed and executed to support academic success.
The Academic Success teacher will have a strong understanding of inclusion practices and supports socialemotional learning and strategies and an ability to build capacity with and alongside school staff to enhance student supports and success. Meetings with students and families to build support plans and graduation pathways is part of this role. The Academic Success teacher will support Indigenous EA and Aboriginal Youth and Family Worker staff within the school and will be a team lead for guiding work and Ministry required data tracking. The Academic Success teacher leads regular schoolbased AbEd team meetings.
Embedded within this position are cultural supports including but not limited to the following: relationship building with community and families and creating opportunities to share Indigenous knowledge history and diversity within the school building. They will also work to support teachers to Indigenize lessons and curriculum. The Academic Success teacher will also be responsible for other supports such as supporting families with Jordans Principle applications and food equity programs for nominal roll students and all Indigenous students.
Supervised by the Director of Indigenous Education and school principals the Academic Success teacher will work as part of the larger Indigenous Education team in SD8 and will attend AbEd district staff meetings to share reflections grow strengths and stay current on district initiatives. They will also carry out other duties to support district Indigenous Education programs. All work within this position is designed to enhance Indigenous student success in SD8.
