Location: Washington Corrections Center for Women Gig Harbor WA

Salary Range: $5175 $6959 Monthly


This position is not allocated for teleworking and is represented by the Teamsters 117 Bargaining Unit.

Are you energetic and supportive of others Do you have a desire to see others succeed If so the Recreation and Athletics Specialist 3 (RAS3 at the Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW) position may be your next career move! The goal of this position is to provide activities that reduce idleness by allowing incarcerated individuals an opportunity to participate in supervised and structured physical and pro social activities.


In this position the Recreation and Athletics Specialist is tasked with promoting incarcerated individuals responsibility for their health and wellness by adopting positive lifestyle habits. Programs are designed to reduce the number of disciplinary issues as well as injuries related to stress and strain. All duties and responsibilities of this role are in support of the Agencys mission to improve public safety by positively changing lives.


This position is critical in contributing to a safe and secure environment for all staff volunteers and incarcerated individuals. As an RAS3 you will improve lives and keep people safe. You will also support peoples success safety and respectful and inclusive interactions cultivate an environment of integrity and trust and show how to exercise positivity through words and actions.

Duties

We are looking for teammates who share our vision of public service committed to an equitable and inclusive culture that fosters and inspires excellence while promoting innovation engagement and safety leading to better outcomes for our incarcerated population our agency and our community.


As a Recreation & Athletics Specialist 3 some of your duties will include:

  • Supervising daily gym/yard activities which could include:
    • Planning organizing and directing athletic fitness sports and special activities to meet the needs of a large portion of Incarcerated Individuals (I/I) on an individual and collective basis
    • Supervising instructing and evaluating I/I participation in programs and activities for the general population and Close Custody Unit (CCU)
    • Providing instruction and supervision of games sports clinics classes fitness and special events
    • Conferring with clinic and/or unit staff to determine overall fitness needs of the population
    • Conducting reports and evaluates programs on a continual basis
  • Supervising Incarcerated Individuals Volunteers and Guests to include:
    • Maintaining safety and integrity of the recreation building and equipment through inspections and submitting work requests
    • Preparing Facility Guest Access for approval of Guests entering the secure perimeter supervise and ensure Guests interact with population appropriately
  • Budgeting Reporting and Record Keeping
  • Assisting with Special Activities In Cell Craft Permits Hobby Crafts and Music Program
  • Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications

What we need (required qualifications):

  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly factually and concisely
  • Demonstrated ability to recall detailed information and maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills in routine and emergent situations
  • Knowledge of recreation administration
  • Knowledge of several fields of recreation activities to include athletics fitness music arts and crafts

What will make your application stand out (preferred qualifications):

  • A Bachelors degree involving major study in either (a) recreation or therapeutic recreation; (b) music drama or physical education or (c) psychology sociology or education with a minor in recreation physical education music or drama
  • Three years of professional experience including one year in a supervisory capacity
  • Three years of experience as a Recreation/Athletics Specialist 2

Telework Details

This position may be allocated for telework. Work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at that time. Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner to take proper care all stateissued equipment and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite. Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires to potentially include components of the onboarding process. Some offices will have a drop in area available however a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
