The Simulation & Training Solutions (STS) Software Engineering department seeks a Senior Engineering Manager to head a team of software development engineers focused on Virtual Avionics Engineering (VAE). The VAE team in Cedar Rapids IA is expanding due to increased demand for simulation training software that is derived from realtime aircraft operational flight programs and extended with ARINC610 simulation standards and customer driven requirements.
The retargeted simulation software models aircraft systems from low level data bus flows to high level peer to peer subsystem communication and is built on top of proprietary graphics drawing libraries and runtime executives. Resulting in high fidelity solutions that are optimized to range in use from Windows Desktop to Virtual Reality to certified FullFlight Simulator applications.
The team supports training devices software and systems from moderate to high complexity while leveraging the latest in PC highperformance computing gaming and display technologies for use in training and familiarizing Flight Crews and Ground Crews in the use of various Collins aircraft avionics systems from Commercial airspace to Military theaters.
The VAE team also builds lowerlevel training devices by integrating our rehosted avionics software with Collins proprietary simulation environments and COTS equipment see following links for examples:
- manager will lead a group of 1020 software engineers and provide direct technical support to projects. The manager will coach in a fastpaced environment drive teamwork continuous improvements. This position requires ownership attention to detail and teamwork for the development of a positive and productive work environment. Development methodology is a hybrid of Spiral development and Agile planning and execution. The team works directly with our customers to integrate and support our software in their training systems. Both domestic and international travel to customer sites and industry demonstrations may be needed. This position will be based onsite in Cedar Rapids IA and reports directly to the Director of Software Products for STS.
What you will do:
- Head a team responsible for software development testing releases & delivery.
- Hold the team accountable for meeting planned program milestones and activities.
- Assess employees skills and identify training and development needs for the team.
- Establish a strong team through recruiting hiring onboarding and assimilation of new hires.
- Interact with program management ensuring the scope is managed and staffing plans are achievable.
- Actively manage staff loading ensuring firm and anticipated demand is accurate and appropriate staff levels are allocated.
- Assist in tactical implementation of organizations strategic goals.
- Ensure all enterprise engineering quality and business conduct process and policies are implemented and understood.
- Assist with bid reviews and ensure cadences and product ownership is established for the team.
Qualifications You Must Have:
- Typically requires a degree in Science Technology Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience or in absence of a degree 14 years of relevant experience
- Experience in software engineering development process from bids and proposals through verification and validation.
- Strong technical leadership preferably of small to medium engineering teams.
- Resource planning experience including staff facilities and equipment needed for successful project execution.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Development background in Microsoft Windows Visual Studio & Eclipse with Ada C/C/C# Python & Matlab Simulink.
- Knowledge of Collins Pro Line 21 & Fusion Avionics HUD & PFCC Simulation Software Modeling & Development using Collins VISTA.
- Understanding of building and debugging realtime multithreaded applications endian interoperability distributed data marshalling.
- Experience troubleshooting hardwaresoftware systems integration shared memory Ethernet and Arinc communication.
- Understanding of GPU technology development.
- Experience and working knowledge of capture process and proposal development.
- Strong acumen for earned value management. Cost account management experience preferred.
- Experience with Agile and DevSecOps development process.
- Skilled in ALM tools such as Jira Confluence Jama Bamboo and Crucible.
- Energetic and enthusiastic leadership.
- Ability to develop powerful networks such as relationships between Engineering Business Development and Program Management.

The salary range for this role is 124000 USD 250000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
