Position Description

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has an exciting opportunity for an exceptional and experienced ShortTerm Temporary (11month) Senior Safety Specialist (Sr. Safety & Health SpecialistBU)to join the Risk & Quality Assurance Division. This position supports general safety health and environmental functions focusing on construction and industrial hygiene efforts while partnering with leadership and frontline staff. You will work alongside other safety team members to collaborate on projects while also working independently.


This ShortTerm Temporary position is expected to lastup to 11monthsand is open to all qualified candidates. This position is initially nonbenefited and will receive premium pay in lieu of benefits.

Job Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities for this Sr. Safety Specialist:

Confined Space Program Review

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Audit & Procedure Development

Trenching & Excavation Safety Review

Industrial Hygiene Programs

Review and Update Physical Job Demands forms

Qualifications


Experience: Three (3) years professional experience in safety or health related field

Education:Bachelors degree in Occupational Health Safety Toxicology Industrial Hygiene Biology Engineering or related discipline. (If no degree an additional two (2) years of relevant experience is required.)


License Certification and Other Requirements:
  • At the time of appointment must hold a valid Washington State Driver License
Desired Qualifications:
  • Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist (preferred but not required)
  • Experience developing JSAs and SOPs in an operations environment
  • Experience with database management and creating reports
  • Effective oral and written communication skills including ability to provide training presentations
  • Familiarity with Confined Space Lock Out/Tag Out Traffic Control/Flagging Fall Protection Trenching/Shoring Hazardous Waste Operations in Construction and General Industry.
  • Reviewing and Developing Safety Procedures.
  • Ability to facilitate technical training and presentations.
  • Strong skills in working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills for internal and external customers.
  • Skills in Safety Management Systems and Microsoft 365.

The full salary range for this position is $54.28 per hour $63.19 per hour.

*Temporary employees will start at Step 1 of this progressive range at $54.28 per hour.


Workplace Environment:
  • This position requires the selected candidate to work five (5) days inoffice and the specific schedule will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment follow safety procedures and exercise caution during inspections.
  • Work is generally performed in an office environment and at various SPU job sites
