Job Description

Under the umbrella of the Division of Institutional Advancement and the supervision of the Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement the Director BNC is responsible for the overall leadership and day to day management of the BNC and for its integration into the larger Development enterprise. The Director will ensure that the BNC fulfills its mission as a membership organization raising funds to support Brandeis University and its libraries.

Provides support to the volunteer leaders maintaining focus on longrange and shortterm objectives and goals. Facilitates a collaborative relationship between the BNC staff and volunteers the Office of Development and the larger University. Develops leadership development training and provides support to all key volunteers traveling as needed. Serves on nominating committee and the steering committee of the Strategic Assessment Task Force. Approximate of time spent: 20%

Administers delivery of all programs and services; analyzes delivery of all national programs to ensure they meet both Brandeis University and BNC goals ensuring that all BNC materials and programs reflect the quality and standards of the university. Recommends new programs as appropriate. Approximate of time spent: 20%

Develops lifelong learning materials and programs including University on Wheels (UOW) faculty programming working with other University offices as appropriate. Approximate of time spent: 15%

Manages BNC communications: Serves as editor of the BNC edition of Brandeis Magazine; Coordinates outreach programming and public relations; manages all marketing and advertising functions; establishes a communication plan; recommends addition of elimination of publications; develops annual marketing; analyzes membership reports. Approximate of time spent: 15%

Works with national president to set meeting agendas; reviews and edits meeting minutes manages annual conference and leadership training; investigates and reports to the National President on issues affecting national administration. Prepares reports on national programs and projects for board; attends conferences. Approximate of time spent: 10%

Monitors and analyzes the use of the BNCs resources to maximize the return in terms of membership benefit and fundraising success.

Works with BNC financial accounting; reviews and approves all national disbursements; establishes policies for chapter and region fundraising goals; informs national and chapter leaders on tax issues related to nonprofit organizations. Reviews and approves contracts for execution by appropriate University officials. Enhances fundraising capabilities; monitors progress of fundraising mission; monitors chapter achievements. Approximate of time spent: 10%

Responsible for annual staff performance reviews; Provides coaching and mentoring for all staff and seeks out appropriate professional development opportunities for staff. Approximate of time spent: 10%

Work Experience: 8 years


The BNC has a National membership of 12000 with chapters in 40 cities. Some chapters provide occasional social and education programs perhaps 23 per year while other larger chapters provide programming as frequently as 1 or 2x per month. The Acting Executive Director must be able to provide support and consultation to all of these chapters on an as needed basis. The AD also plans annual leadership development programs and national conferences for National Board and chapter leaders.


In consultation with the National volunteer leadership and the Vice President of Development the AD makes final decisions regarding all national programming has ultimate responsibility for monitoring the use of BNC resources and has final authority for ensuring that chapter programming meets university standards.
