Job Description

The City of Lenexa is looking for an experienced Recreation Superintendent to oversee the daily operations staff and facilities of the Recreation division. The ideal candidate is creative passionate about working with the public and has exceptional leadership qualities. This position will operate out of our Lenexa Rec Center facility.

Position Summary

This management position within the Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for both directly and indirectly overseeing all regular and seasonal staff as well as managing the daytoday operations of the Recreation Division. The division operates several community facilities including SarKoPar Aquatic Center Flat Rock Creek Pool Ad Astra Pool Rec Center Aquatics Natatorium Lenexa Old Town Activity Center Lenexa Cemetery and Legler Barn Museum and Depot. Additionally the division is tasked with planning coordinating and executing a diverse range of recreational programs for all age groups as well as organizing a robust offering of special events and festivals. Key programs under the divisions purview include the Farmers Market Art Enrichment Aquatic Operations at four locations and Out of School Time camps. The Superintendent is also responsible for collaborating with community partners to foster sponsorships for City festival and events. The position develops the divisions budget while managing the implementation of the approved budget.

Essential Functions Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directly and indirectly manages all regular and seasonal division staff including recruitment hiring training and performance evaluations. Supports professional development resolves workrelated issues and implements strategies to motivate employees toward achieving division goals while assessing outcomes. Responds during off hours (evenings & weekends) to issues and emergencies related to the operation of assigned responsibilities and any other departmentrelated activity as needed.
  • Develops and enforces departmental policies and procedures ensuring alignment with City policies and coordinating their . Establishes division operating schedules and ensures proper procedures and policies are implemented to foster safe consistent and successful services.
  • Collaborates with other department divisions to manage operate and ensure proper procedures and policies are implemented for care safety and maintenance for community facilities including SarKoPar Aquatic Center Flat Rock Creek Pool Ad Astra Pool Rec Center Aquatics Natatorium Lenexa Old Town Activity Center Lenexa Cemetery and Legler Barn Museum and Depot.
  • Oversees and assists with the design and implementation of recreation programs suited to the needs of participants and the community. Collaborates with division staff to ensure success of program areas that include early childhood school age youth adults 50 camps sport and fitness aquatics enrichment nature history adult trips special events and festivals.
  • Cultivates sponsorships through local community partners for a variety of special events festivals art events Farmers Market and Public Market opportunities. Manages sponsorship package options contracts and reconciles payments.
  • Generates and monitors program and event costrecovery goals studies and evaluates division activities including patron participation and attendance. Prepares evaluates provides recommendations on the divisions annual budget which is reviewed by the Assistant Director and Director and for managing the implementation of the approved budget.
  • Coordinates all marketing social media signage and communication needs for the Recreation division team by working closely with the Communications Department. Leads the collection and review process for the department on content for the City resident magazine.
  • Recreation programs events festivals and division staff are located in several locations throughout the city. Driving City provided vehicle or personal vehicle will be required to perform essential functions of the position.

Qualifications

Minimum: A bachelors degree in parks and recreation administration public administration or related field; 56 years in municipal parks and recreation experience and 34 years supervisory experience or any combination of education and experience that provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Environment and Physical Factors

Work is performed in a standard office and busy Recreation Center environment. This position requires the ability to walk stand and sit for extended periods and visual acuity to determine the accuracy neatness and thoroughness of work assigned.

Salary/Compensation and Benefits
The hiring range for the Recreation Superintendent is $89316 $103542 dependent on qualifications. The City also offers a competitive benefits package including following:
