Job Summary

The Kafka Platform Engineer designs implements and supports scalable secure Kafkabased messaging pipelines that power realtime communication between critical systems such as credit loan applications and fraud services. This role focuses on improving the resiliency reliability and operations of our Kafka platform in a highly regulated financial environment. The Kafka Platform Engineer partners closely with engineering and platform teams to support the migration from onprem to AWS and ensure seamless integration across systems.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Technology Solutions: Understand the software development lifecycle to support implementation of technology solutions that create and enhance applications in the mainframe space. Inspect analyze and translate application functional and nonfunctional requirements into infrastructure technical design application code and configuration parameters. Provide technical oncall support as defined within the team and role expectations. Demonstrate proficiency in two or more programming languages (e.g. COBOL Java) and develop or maintain at least three applications. Responsible for working with Mainframe application development engineers to review and troubleshoot code in conjunction with Infrastructure DB2 Database code reviews and other Code level activities that may have an impact on the Mainframe infrastructure.

  • Quality and Testing: Create and execute unit tests to ensure issues are proactively identified within the software development lifecycle. Assist in analyzing code to identify causes of errors and defects. Remediate known errors within development and production support contexts. Review application code with application and MSP teams. Estimate and size work based upon highlevel requirements. Continuously improve infrastructure for applications and processes with a focus on quality efficiency and user experience.

  • Partnership: Cultivate relationships across roles and organizations to maximize collaboration partnership and efficiency. Provide peer coaching and feedback formally and informally. Request and utilize feedback to foster personal development. Manage and lead the relationship with our Managed Service Provider (MSP) who supports our Mainframe environments. Build and maintain strong relationships with midlevel business partners with executive level leadership and serve as the Mainframe technology subject matter expert in cross functional meetings. Demonstrate a strong understanding of the business and articulate business value of technology solutions to business partners.

  • Strategic Impact: Handle mainframe SME initiatives such as; review and approval of IPL/upgrade schedules observability of Mainframe environments such as dashboards/monitoring/alerting high availability configuration and practices OEM upgrades/updates to keep the environments and Mainframe support applications up to date and support OEM ticket submission process/tracking. Responsible for approval/denial of MSP SLA adherence to Mainframe availability Mainframe maintenance and Mainframe changes. Responsible for approval/denial of MSP monthly billing review in conjunction with the MSP SLA adherence through Bread Financial governance portal.

  • Leadership: Work autonomously providing technical supervision to peers while demonstrating appreciable business knowledge within the general financial services and marketing domains. Influence the team to generate support to achieve desired business outcomes. Responsible for the relationship of IBM Broadcom BMC and other Mainframe vendors used to support maintain and improve our Mainframe environments. Mentor and coach MSP technology leads and other technical team members to assess needs provide assistance and resolve technical problems. Lead and direct MSP technical leads and Application Development teams to identify improvement opportunities in resiliency reliability and observability in the Mainframe environments. Operate as subject matter expert responsible for providing strategic direction input to senior leadership on the support maintenance growth and utilization of our Mainframe environment.

Reports To: IT Infrastructure Sr. Manager

Direct Reports: None has technical oversight over MSP team members.

Working Conditions/ Physical Requirements:

  • Normal office environment. (Remote or Hybrid) 3 to 4 days per month are required in office if within 60 miles of a posted Bread Financial location.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in computer science or related field of study.

  • 10 years of experience working across areas of the mainframe environment.

  • 5 years of experience designing and deploying complex mainframe IT solutions.

  • Experience within a mainframe technical background using COBOL CICS VSAM JCL and related utilities.

  • Experience as a Senior Systems Programmer using z/OS CICS DB2 network RACF storage management WebSphere disk storage and LPAR management.

  • Experience related to zMainframe disaster recovery and resiliency.

  • Experience with the creation of detailed documentation for daily operational functions event management and recoverability.

  • Experience with LPAR creation and management resulting in the elimination of single points of failure continuous uninterrupted operations simplified disaster recovery and costeffective software licensing costs.

  • Experience with budget and forecast management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years of experience with Apache Kafka in highly regulated missioncritical environments (preferably finance or banking).

  • Strong understanding of Kafka internals and distributed systems.

  • Proficiency in Java Scala or Python for building Kafka producers consumers and stream processors.

  • Experience with Kafka Connect Schema Registry (Avro) and Kafka Streams.

  • Handson experience with containerization (Docker Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Familiarity with securing Kafka using Kerberos SSL ACLs and integration with IAM systems.

  • Solid understanding of financial transaction systems messaging standards and data privacy regulations (e.g. SOX PCIDSS GDPR).

Maryland: $140100.00 $266100.00

Illinois: $133500.00 $266100.00

New Jersey: $153500.00 $278200.00

The actual base pay within this range may be dependent upon many factors which may include but are not limited to work location education experience and skills.

Bread Financial offers medical prescription drug dental vision and other voluntary benefits (including basic and optional life insurance supplemental medical plans and short and longterm disability) to eligible associates (regular fulltime associates scheduled to work 30 hours per week or more) and their spouses/domestic partners and child(ren) under the age of 26. New associate elected coverage begins on date of hire (with the exception of disability coverage which has a 6month waiting period). Six weeks of 100 paid parental leave for eligible parents is available after a 180day waiting period. Hired associates can immediately enroll in Bread Financials 401(k) plan.

All associates receive 11 paid holidays. Associates have discretion in managing their time away from work through the Flexible Time Off (FTO) program and may need to notify and receive approval from their manager prior to taking the time off. Associates (except those located in Illinois) receive 80 hours of Paid Sick and Safe Time (PSST) upon hire and at the beginning of each subsequent calendar year. Illinois associates receive 40 hours of Illinois PSST upon hire and at the beginning of each subsequent calendar year and 40 hours of Illinois Paid Leave upon hire and at the beginning of each subsequent calendar year. Illinois Paid Leave must be used before associates in Illinois will be approved to take FTO.

Hired associates will be able to elect the purchase company stock during offering periods in June and December. You will be eligible for an annual incentive bonus based on individual and company performance.
