The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking a skilled Maintenance Specialist 3 to lead in the installation maintenance and repair of highway signs throughout the Southwest Region. This position performs work that includes repairing servicing and installing impact attenuators maintaining sign log records and operating a variety of highway maintenance equipment and tools to perform the maintenance of highways bridges and right of ways to improve the safety of the traveling public. In addition there are opportunities to train team members on aspects of sign installation and servicing. What to Expect

This position performs work that is often physical in nature and primarily outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Work duties may be performed at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water. Typical schedule is Monday through Friday 40hours per week for 4 10hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to nonscheduled or callout emergencies.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role the Regionwide Sign Specialist will:

  • Lead plan and schedule highway sign maintenance activities.
  • Assemble install maintain and replace signs including overhead signs sign components and signposts.
  • Inspect signs in all types of weather in both day and nighttime conditions.
  • Wash signs using bucket truck.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment including but not limited to cleaning vehicles and greasing equipment etc.
  • Train staff to perform sign maintenance and operations tasks in the event of absences.
  • Document maintain and update sign logs and activity reports; enter data into computerized systems.
  • Operate Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A equipment; asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair utilizing trucks rollers mechanical sweepers and hand tools; apply concrete asphalt and synthetic materials.
  • Perform highway maintenance activities to include regionwide work zone traffic control ditching pavement markings and recess and rumble strip installation.
  • Assess sign inventory and order signs and related components as necessary.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:

  • One 1 year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 or Maintenance Specialist 2 or equivalent construction experience.
  • A CDL Class A with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction and a valid medical card.
  • A valid Traffic Control/Flagging Card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning setting signs and cones or barrels and flagging.
  • Two 2 years of experience performing traffic control on high speed multilane highways.
  • Experience leading and/or supervising crews providing clear direction and making good decisions in stressful conditions.
  • Digger Derrick certification or ability to obtain within six 6 months.
  • Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
  • Experience in working independently and prioritizing workload with the ability to handle multiple assignments.
  • Ability and willingness to work nights weekends holidays and perform emergency callouts/standby.
  • Possess computer skills (such as Microsoft Office Suite programs including Excel Word and Outlook).
  • Ability to traverse rough steep and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to travel region wide.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an afterhours call.
  • Ability to relocate tools equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds from one location to another.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • High school diploma a GED certificate or equivalent.
  • Understanding of TEF owned equipment.
  • Experience planning coordinating and communicating clear instructions on jobsites.
  • Traffic Control Supervisor certification.
  • Experience with high speed/ high volume traffic.
  • Knowledge of the surrounding area.
