Managing Editor Medical & Scientific Communications
Job Overview
Line manages as required and coach mentor and train small editorial teams thereby contributing to the development of a strong multiskilled editorial department. Manage daytoday workflow within an editorial group ensuring efficient profitable and timely resourcing and delivery of project work. Fulfil all required managerial administrative tasks by the deadlines (e.g. annual goals competencies ad hoc requests from senior leadership).
Essential Functions
- Manage resourcing and monitor overall workload for the department. Balance with available headcount flagging the need for additional resource when necessary.
- Edit pieces as part of the editorial team as much as 75 of your time ensuring quality pieces through fact checking copyediting and checking changes formatting and consistency within and across pieces and style guides and within all industry standards and guidance.
- Line manages as required and coach mentor and train editorial teams.
- Fulfil all required managerial administrative tasks by the deadlines (e.g. annual goals competencies ad hoc requests from senior leadership).
- Proactively identify lead and oversee major process improvement initiatives collaborating with editorial team members as well as colleagues in other departments.
- Cultivate strong longterm working relationships with internal and external key decisionmakers and proactively network across functions.
- Oversee more complex projects for other Editors when necessary providing advice and guidance as needed and troubleshooting where necessary particularly for unusual situations.
- Exercise excellent interpersonal/communication skills for effective and professional liaison with internal teams and other key stakeholders to obtain comprehensive briefs and responses to queries.
- Check the work of less experienced Editors when necessary.
- Maintain a clear understanding of how quality fits into the bigger picture and be able to advise other Editors on how best to balance quality with timelines and budget.
- Follow all company standard operating procedures (SOPs) as well as industry regulations departmental guidance and quality control measures to meet industry standards and client expectations. Monitor and ensure compliance within the team.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree preferred.
- 57 years of prior relevant experience in a medical communications or publishing environment required.
- Proven line management experience within a medical communications agency required.
- Strong computer skills including MS office Word PowerPoint Excel Outlook Internet and reference management programs.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
- Familiarity with a wide range of materials including exhibitions stagesets congress materials pitch presentations and digital media.
- Excellent attention to detail.

The actual base pay offered may vary based on a number of factors including jobrelated qualifications such as knowledge skills education and experience; location; and/or schedule (full or parttime).
