Job Description

Job Title: Physical Therapist

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Department: Special Education

Reports To: Campus (es) Assigned

Approved By: Board of Trustees

SUMMARY:

As physical therapist plan and provide direct therapy to students with physical disabilities. Assess students and plan therapeutic intervention to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with students ability to derive full benefit from the educational program. In the area of therapy plan and provide therapy to students with mental physical or emotional disabilities. Assess students and provide therapeutic intervention to maximize physical or mental functioning increase independent functioning and/or adjust to disabilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Masters/Doctorate degree in physical therapy

EXPERIENCE:

One year of experience as a Physical therapist preferred

CERTIFICATES LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:

As required by the State of Texas

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of medical information and indications for physical therapy treatment
  • Knowledge of rehabilitation procedures activities and equipment used in Physical therapy
  • Skill in use of tests and measurements for assessing physical function
  • Ability to administer manual exercises and physical therapy treatments
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Occupational Therapy

  1. Plan and provide direct and consultative services consistent with Physical therapy goals contained in students Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  2. Evaluate student progress and determine readiness for termination of Physical therapy services.
  3. Design construct alter and provide students with adaptive equipment and devices to promote maximum independence.

Assessment

  1. Assess students with physical disabilities and determine eligibility for services.
  2. Conducts evaluations to access fundamental sensory perceptual and motor skills required for specific academic tasks to determine eligibility for services.
  3. Develops appropriate comprehensive plan with measureable long term and short term objectives specific to students needs for successful participation in academic school year.
  4. Participate in the Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with interpretation of assessment data appropriate placement and goal setting for students with physical disabilities according to district procedures.

Consultation

  1. Consult and collaborate with educational staff regarding the use of specialized equipment and materials to improve motor perceptual and selfcare skills of students.
  2. Consult with educational staff and parents regarding occupational therapy.
  3. Provide professional development training to help school personnel understand students with physical disabilities.
  4. Provide professional development training to assist with use of adaptive equipment and understanding of occupational therapy program.
  5. Consult with teachers administrators and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.
  6. Communicates effective with colleagues students administrators parents regarding the accomplishments of therapy goals and needs of the student.

Student Management

  1. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level interests and needs of the student.
  2. Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  3. Supervises licensed occupational therapy assistant must be a licensed occupational therapist by TBOTE.

Program Management

  1. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the occupational therapy and occupational therapy programs and make changes based on the findings.
  2. Assist in the selection of equipment and adaptive material.
  3. Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.

Administration

  1. Compile maintain and file all reports records and other required documents.
  2. Comply with policies established by federal and state law State Board of Education rule and local board policy.
  3. Comply with all district and assigned campus routines and regulations.
  4. Effectively communicate with colleagues students and parents.
  5. Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignments.

Other

  1. Maintain confidentiality.
  2. Participate in meetings and special events as assigned.
  3. Exercise professional judgment in absences; be punctual to work meetings and appointments.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and analyze and interpret general business periodicals professional journals or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators staff students parents and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts interest commissions proportions percentages area circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasional absences are understood but regular attendance is required.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Frequent standing stooping bending reaching pulling pushing heavy lifting and moderate carrying are required. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Regular districtwide travel to multiple work locations is required. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours and to meet multiple demands from several people at the same time. The employee will be required to interact with the public and other workers.

The employee must maintain emotional control under stress.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment varies depending on the site being visited and the activity being conducted. The office environment is usually very quiet.
