Job Description

The Literacy Lead Teacher teaches in the literacy content area for 50 of their working time and leads or assists instructional staff in designing highquality instructional programs.

Position contingent on grant funding

SALARY
Commensurate with certification and experience based on the Wicomico County Salary Schedule for Teachers. Includes benefits.


HOURS
10 months 190 days
Contract Unit: This position is part of the Teachers (Unit I) bargaining unit.
FLSA: Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS

Maryland State Department of Education teaching certificate in Early Childhood Elementary 16 or Special Education with Reading Specialist.

National Board Certification Masters in Reading or Reading Specialist certificate is preferred. Applicants working on National Board Certification or in a Masters program for Reading may also qualify.

ESOL certification National Board Certification in ESOL or demonstrated experience in ESOL instruction preferred.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of pedagogy related to the science of reading. Familiarity with current researchbased instructional practices in reading/language arts.

Ability to administer and utilize reading assessments for the diagnosticprescriptive teaching of reading.

RESPONSIBILITIES & CORE COMPETENCIES

Professional Development & Coaching

  • Partner with school leadership to develop and implement a professional development (PD) cycle tailored to school and district needs that supports school improvement efforts.
  • Lead professional learning focusing on evidencebased coaching practices.
  • Provide leadership mentorship and coaching to teachers through structured learning opportunities and modeling best practices.
  • Ensure teachers are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively implement WCPS initiatives.

Instructional Support & Teaching

  • Teach or coteach for 50 of the school day demonstrating exemplary instructional practices aligned with the WCPS Curriculum and Maryland College and Career Ready Standards (MCCRS).
  • Guide in early identification and intervention using assessment systems and the MultiTiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework.
  • Assist in using data to offer differentiated support and recommend instructional improvements to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Guide teachers in using student performance data to adjust instruction and improve learning outcomes.

Collaboration & School Improvement

  • Partner with school leadership to identify areas of instructional need and design professional learning opportunities to address them.
  • Participate in schoolbased instructional leadership teams contributing expertise and insights to improve teaching and learning.
  • Support a culture of continuous learning by fostering collaboration and shared leadership among teacher leaders.
