VDOTs Fredericksburg District has exciting an opportunity available in its Preliminary Engineering Department. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill a Roadway Design Engineer vacancy. This position designs manages and produces right of way and construction roadway plans for a wide range of transportation projects using automated engineering and design software. A qualified candidate will:
Work with team members and consultants and will maintain applicable skills in new design technology/construction methodology
Develop and review subcomponents and complete roadway designs using automated engineering and design software from scoping to advertisement for a wide range of transportation projects
Assist in the management of projects and tasks including development of and managing the scope schedule budget deliverables change management quality and status reports
Provide extraordinary customer service and engage all stakeholders to develop solutions that balance the needs of citizens special interest groups and local governments
Complete roadway design tasks in MicroStation GeoPak ORD PCES and other nonCADD applications
Plan schedule and coordinate engineering program activities such that deliverables are met within the established scope and timeline

Required skills for job & position:
Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include MS Office project management and engineering software programs
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities with competing deadlines and limited resources
Ability to interpret technical data and prepare and maintain detailed reports
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
Ability to apply engineering principles and practices
Ability to enforce and demonstrate safety behaviors as well as advocate and practice safety in everyday work activities
Knowledge of design standards specifications policies and procedures
Ability to read and understand highway construction plan
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse groups
Knowledge of roadway design criteria construction methods standards specifications and materials
Ability to provide detailed reports on review findings
Knowledge of VDOT state and federal policies and procedures relating to transportation engineering
Knowledge of civil engineering principles as they relate to roadway design and standard design technical knowledge
Ability to negotiate outcomes and work with diverse customer groups
Knowledge engineering specifications and standards
Knowledge of project management procedures and principles
Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to internal and external customers
Ability to draw rational conclusions and develop solutions from analysis; make independent decisions; and manage multiple assignments
Knowledge of principles of roadway safety that impact roadway standards and special designs

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences
Experience in roadway design criteria construction methods standards specifications and materials
Experience applying design standards specifications policies and procedures
Experience applying civil engineering principles as they relate to roadway design and standard design technical knowledge
Skill in building networks and relationships with employees field personnel contractors manufacturers and FHWA representatives
Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include engineering and design software
Ability to plan and schedule work
Skill in delivering exemplary customer service
Knowledge of principles of roadway safety that impact roadway standards and special designs

Additional Considerations

Experience in roadway design and project management for transportation projects
A combination of training experience or education in civil engineering or related field desired
Experience in Open Roads Design (ORD) or equivalent CADD software
Engineering in Training (EIT) Project Management Professional (PMP) or Professional Engineer (PE) license
Knowledge or experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
