Independence High School Student Services Department
190day contract
School nurses work independently in the school setting under the supervision of a Director of Nursing and Resource Nurse. School nurses manage students with acute and chronic health care needs and are responsible for the overall management of immunization compliance healthcare plans vision and hearing screenings and delegation of medication administration and procedures to the health assistant. The school nurse collaborates with school staff and administrators to provide daily care and health management of students.
Minimum Qualifications:
- First preference given to Bachelors degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university;
or
- Associates degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university or from an institution accredited by the national league of nursing or a diploma program in nursing accredited by the national league of nursing; and enrolled in or actively pursuing a bachelors degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university or willing to pursue BSN degree (to be obtained within a maximum of 3 years);
and
- Has a valid New Mexico registered nurse license issued by the New Mexico Board of Nursing or any successor licensing board for nurses or license from another state based on current compact state license according to New Mexico nursing board rule.
and
- Current New Mexico Department of Education license appropriate to the assignment or ability to obtain proper licensure within 90 days of hire.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Identifies and reportshealth problems that interfere with student learning through screeningprocedures assessments and evaluations of students;
- Makes appropriate referrals based on data obtained from screenings;
- Serves on committeesand attends required meetings and conferences;
- Provides consultationand training in school health safety health education sanitation andcounseling to students and staff;
- Provides training infirst aid and health screening skills to health assistants;
- Supervises studentaides health aides and student nurses;
- Conducts special education and regular education student screenings;
- Advises and consultswith teachers and parents regarding results;
- Supervises students forselfadministered medications;
- Administers medicationand specialized health care needs to students;
- Implements health management plans with students who have special needs;
- Implements policies andproceduresregardingcontrol of communicable diseases in accordance withregulations of the State of New Mexico Environment Department;
- Coordinates andadministers immunizations for students and staff;
- Coordinatesadministers and interprets tuberculin testing for staff;
- Maintains studenthealth and immunization records to include day month year and appropriatefollowup;
- Assists administrationin arranging emergency care and first aid for students and staff;
- Arranges transportationfor emergency medical care;
- Authorizes exclusionand readmission of students in connection with infectious contagiousand nuisance diseases;
- Participates ininservice training programs workshops and continuing education tomaintain professional status;
- Maintains current CPRcertification;
- Assists Principal inother healthrelated assignments;
- Prepares and maintainsreports related to activities;
- Makes home visits whennecessary;
- Maintains communication and professional rapport with students parents and staff;
- Performs other dutiesas assigned.
Work Hours:
Work hours are establishedin employment contract. Additional work hours may be
required as scheduled by School Principal.
