The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District is seeking an Operator Structure and Bridge to repair maintain and replace bridges and structures in accordance with established safety standards VDOT specifications and procedures and equipment operation standards.
Core responsibilities for job & position:
Participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects and accomplish objectives. Perform manual labor and other tasks as needed to assist the team in accomplishing construction repair and maintenance of timber steel and concrete bridge elements and other structures.
Apply appropriate instream and environmental protection measures during all structural maintenance and construction activities.
Place temporary bridges and remove damaged structures. Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Clear roadways of snow ice and debris and clean up after accidents. Provide traffic control.
Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Identify workplace safety hazards and make suggestions for improvement. Wear personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules regulations laws and procedures (OSHA and VOSHA etc.. Use equipment properly and safely. Apply MUTCD for detours lane closures work zones etc. Maintain clean orderly and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.
Operate light and mediumduty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction related work tasks.
Perform a combination of skilled tasks to include carpentry welding and concrete finishing. Remove and install structural components to erect replace or demolish structures.
Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools. Transport personnel equipment and materials to and from various work sites. Ensure all equipment is properly and safely maintained. Complete pretrip inspections for any vehicle or equipment operated.
Required skills for job & position:

Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods equipment materials and safety practices.
Skill in fabricating steel components and welding.
Skill in carpentry concrete forming and finishing.
Ability to work at heights in heavy traffic over and in water and under other adverse conditions.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
Ability to work well individually and as a team member.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
Skill in the operation and use of light and mediumduty equipment such as dump trucks loaders backhoes etc.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position may be designated to support emergency operations during certain situations. As such you may occasionally be required to work an assignment that includes hours outside the normal work schedule including weekends and holidays. Not all designated employees are provided an emergency operations assignment.

Additional Considerations
Experience in carpentry building forms and false works and concrete placement and finishing.
Experience with light to mediumduty equipment and hand and power tools.
Experience in bridge maintenance or construction.
Valid Certified Crane Operator with appropriate endorsements.
A combination of training experience or education in Construction or related field desired.
Experience fabricating or welding steel components.
Valid Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements.

References and verification of work history DMV Records Check preemployment physical and drug screen fingerprintbased criminal history records check. This position also requires approved safety shoes as a reimbursable expense. Applicants selected for interview will be required to perform a skills demonstration during interview process.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7 2022 new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entrylevel drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA approved EntryLevel Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours on average of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
Position is designated as essential and as such will be required to work outside normal hours weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather disaster response and emergency operations. Travel may be required.
VDOT utilizes a marketbased pay program which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
