Description & Requirements

The Office of Government Relations (OGR) at the Broad Institute seeks a Government Relations Specialist (GRS) to play an essential role in strengthening and advancing Broads advocacy agenda. This earlycareer position offers an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual with a passion for biomedical research policy government affairs and operational excellence.

About the role
The Government Relations Specialist will report to the Associate Director of Science Policy and Advocacy and support OGR in both substantive policy research and essential administrative and operational functions. The role requires a balance of research writing event coordination stakeholder engagement and daytoday administrative management.


This is a multifaceted position that demands both strong analytical insight and operational agility. The GRS will be responsible for interpreting legislative proposals and regulatory actions analyzing their potential impact on biomedical research and translating complex policy information into clear strategic materials for internal and external stakeholders. The role is ideal for someone who can think critically communicate clearly and contribute meaningfully to the Broads advocacy efforts.


The GRS will collaborate closely with the Associate Director of OGR Broads Communications Office and leadership teams across the Broad to ensure the Institutes government relations priorities are effectively communicated to policymakers including Congress the Administration and state and local governments. They will also support Broads engagement with member institutions and external partners on key academic and biomedical research priorities.

Key responsibilities
1. Policy research writing and advocacy support

Prepare policy memos premeeting briefings and dossiers for Broad leadership and advocacy stakeholders.

Conduct policy research and analyze proposed legislative developments relevant to federal state and local biomedical research funding data policy and innovation.

Attend briefings hearings and stakeholder meetings (primarily virtual) and write summaries of legislative and policy developments. Occasional daytravel to Washington DC (up to three times a year) may be expected.

Draft and disseminate postmeeting summaries and key takeaways to internal teams and external partners.

Support the development of public policy positions advocacy strategies and communications materials in collaboration with the Communications Office.

2. Government relations operations & stakeholder management

Manage daytoday operations of the Office of Government Relations including meeting coordination scheduling and logistics.

Assist in planning and executing government relations events including highprofile government visits policymaker engagements and Broadhosted policy briefings.

Track outreach efforts and stakeholder engagement using CRM and database tools to document Broads interactions with policymakers.

Coordinate government relations reporting ensuring timely updates on policy activities legislative developments and breaking news coverage of priority health policy issues.

Assist AD in liaising between Broad and their external consultants.

Develop monthly reports for relevant internal and external stakeholders tracking and reporting activities on behalf of the Office of Government Relations.

3. Administrative & event coordination support

Handle scheduling and administrative duties for the Associate Director including arranging meetings maintaining correspondence booking travel and supporting daily workflows.

Manage vendor relationships contract renewals and budget tracking related to government relations activities.

Provide event support including logistics agenda preparation briefing materials and onsite coordination for meetings with policymakers and external partners.

Qualifications

Required skills & experience

Exceptional written and oral communication skills with the ability to synthesize complex policy topics into clear concise materials.

Strong analytical and interpretive skills especially in evaluating the implications of policy developments.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities meet deadlines and maintain attention to detail in a fastpaced environment.

Selfmotivated individual who can work independently and also collaborate across teams and stakeholder groups.

Demonstrated ability to work with discretion tact and good judgment particularly when handling sensitive policy discussions.

Experience in policy research legislative tracking and/or government relations is preferred.

Familiarity with event planning stakeholder engagement and CRM platforms is a plus.

Education & experience

Bachelors or Masters degree in a STEM discipline public policy political science or a related field preferred.

1 3 years experience in government public or private research institutions professional associations or policy organizations.

Previous experience working on public policy government affairs or science policy issues is highly desirable.
