Safety in motion starts with you a certified Elevator Inspector. When stepping into an elevator or onto a ski lift you trust it will carry you safely to your destination. That trust is made possible by the critical work of Elevator Inspectors. As the expert behind the scenes ensuring these systems are not only functional but meet the highest safety standards keeps people movingand keeps them safe.
The DPFR Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation Elevator and Tramway Safety Program needs elevator inspectors to protect public health safety and welfare. Elevator inspectors work independently from a home office and in the field throughout Maine to:
Inspect register and certify new or modified elevators before public use ensuring compliance with safety standards laws regulations and codes. Take action including suspending or revoking certifications when public safety is at risk.
Investigate complaints and accidents caused by elevators and tramways and testify in court hearings as an expert witness on safety violations
Document equipment history including dimensions age condition location and inspection dates on all elevators and tramways
Ensure that elevators and tramways are inspected periodically by their owners pursuant to Maine law
Examine and license elevator mechanics inspectors and tramway personnel to maintain operational integrity
Draft recommended legislation and safety regulations to enhance public protection
Position Logistics
Because travel to inspection sites across Maine is a requirement a State vehicle is provided. By working directly with elevator companies to schedule inspection appointments youll enjoy the flexibility of setting your own schedule. Work is primarily completed in the field at the location of the elevator to be tested or from your home office. Field locations may be fully finished or in process of being built.

What you need:
Knowledge of investigative methods and safety regulations for elevators and tramways
Understanding of machinery electricity motors and lift systems
Strong communication skills both verbal and written
Ability to conduct exams build relationships and provide expert testimony
Proficiency in writing reports and maintaining accurate records
Minimum qualifications:
Two 2 years experience inspecting elevators and tramways.
LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Once hired employees must be able to obtain Certification as issued by the Qualified Elevator Inspector Association.
If you are not already a certified elevator inspector the agency provides assistance towards becoming certified including on the job training certification studying and courses.
