Description

The Veterans Services area of the Human Services and Public Health (HSPH) department is looking to hire a Veterans Treatment Court Coordinator who will oversee the Hennepin County Justice Involved Veterans (JIV) Program along with managing the operations of the Veterans Treatment Court Peer Mentor Program including recruitment interviewing training and sustaining Veteran Peer Mentors. In addition this position will be trained and accredited in assisting Justice Involved Veterans in filing for federal state and nonprofit benefits they may be eligible for.


Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both onsite at the Hennepin County Government Center 300 South Sixth StreetMinneapolis Minnesota 55487 within the community for meetings activities and community events and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday through Friday with typical hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota. Veteran advocates must reside in the State of Minnesota in order for the State Department of Veterans Affairs and the American Legion Claims Offices to accredit them.



In this position you will:
  • Understand state and federal financial veteran program rules to obtain benefits for veterans and to make appropriate referrals
    • Work with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs nonprofit agencies contracted providers and other HSPH service areas to meet the needs of veterans and their families
    • Enroll veterans in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs health care system
    • Obtain VA compensation VA pension state dental optical and financial benefits for veterans
    • Provide advocacy for veterans to obtain needed benefits and services
    • Prepare case records/outcomes social histories correspondence and other documentation using computer applications
  • Manage and oversee the Justice Involved Veterans program within the Veterans Services department.
  • Coordinate and oversee the administrative operations and volunteer management of the Peer Mentor program for Hennepin County.
  • Attend scheduled Veterans Treatment Court hearings pre/post court mentor/mentee meetings and staff meetings as needed.
  • Direct and manage outreach efforts and internal meetings to communicate program information.
  • Provide service at regional sites and the Hennepin County Adult Correctional Facility as part of Human Services and Public Healths regionalization plan.
  • Networking build relationships and meet with nonprofit and interagency partners.

Need to have:
  • Status as a veteran (served in active duty in the U.S. armed forces) as determined in Minnesota State Statute 197.447 (applicants must submit a copy of their DD214 which includes their character of service)
  • One of the following:
    • Bachelors degree or higher in public administration business administration or other field appropriate to the position and two years or more of experience in general administrative work relating to the management of departmental/organizational operations or in a specialty area appropriate to the position.
    • Six or more years of experience in general administrative work relating to the management of departmental/organizational operations or in a specialty area appropriate to the position.
Nice to have:
  • Experience with:
    • Street outreach outreach to veterans in detention facilities home visits and public engagement in communities facing disparities.
    • Veterans treatment court and assisting veterans court participants in obtaining VA Health Care federal VA disability compensation claims state veteran benefits or similar experience within the community.
    • Reviewing and determining client eligibility for government financial assistance health care programs and/or other nongovernmental assistance such as loans credit or private insurance.
    • Conducting interviews and the ability to determine and acquire services for clients.
    • Leading and motivating others to make consistent progress and facilitate completion of activities.
    • Utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Excel Outlook PowerPoint Teams and Word).
  • Ability to:
    • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to internal and external audiences.
    • Work independently and as a team member.
  • Knowledge of state and federal financial assistance program rules to obtain benefits for veterans and to make appropriate referrals.
