Job Description

The Unit Director for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) designs and oversees all nursing and administrative operations for the PICU. The Unit Director is accountable for the overall administrative planning and coordination of the staffing fiscal and material resources. In collaboration with the Director of Pediatric Critical Care Services the Unit Director assists with the development and implementation of new programs and policies. The Unit Director serves as a role model for nursing practice and utilizes nursing and leadership theories to guide practice and clinical quality. Direct reports are Assistant Unit Directors.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $253901 $269436 (Annual Rate).

  • Minimum of 3 (three) years of progressive leadership (supervisory/management) in an inpatient nursing unit
  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • American Heart Association PALS
  • American Heart Association CPR for health care providers CPR
  • Strong hospital management experience with progressive and indepth expertise in patient care services. Knowledge of hospital / clinic operations in a hospital or medical center setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the department and team.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills to foster and promote an environment for effective communication and collaborative decision making across multiple units and disciplines.
  • Excellent leadership fiscal and operations management skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians management and staff from all disciplines
  • Ability to create and maintain a goaloriented climate of teamwork collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements as well as related legislative accreditation licensing and compliance environments.
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations


    • Masters Degree in Nursing or relevant area
    • CCRN Certification
    • Leadership Certification

    Department Description
    The UCSF Benioff Childrens Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is an 20bed tertiary and quaternary medical surgical intensive care unit that cares for critically ill infants through adults with a variety of complex medical conditions and diagnoses including solid organ and bone marrow transplant neurosurgical procedures respiratory failure and continuous renal replacement therapy. Patients admitted to the PICU arrive through many avenues including our emergency department inhospital rapid response and our specialized nursemanaged Transport Team and Access Center. These patients receive care for a variety of lifethreatening medical and surgical conditions. Nurses and nursing leaders are are an integral part of the interdisciplinary team on these units and learn and employ the skills necessary to maintain vital functions for these fragile children while supporting their families through difficult times.
