PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manages and coordinates various structural maintenance projects with a broad range of responsibilities including planning scheduling permitting budget analysis cost estimating and design along with the oversight of fabrication and construction activities.
- Participates in the activities of Structural Maintenance staff to ensure compliance with policies and procedures. Reviews work assignments to ensure compliance with established Structural Maintenance standards.
- Prepares basic structural design analysis sketches detailed drawings cost estimates and specifications as needed for the repairs of deteriorated structural elements on the rapid transit elevated structures bridges buildings and related facilities.
- Participates in inspection and repair audits to determine condition of CTA infrastructure such as track elevated structure tunnels viaducts and retaining walls. Maintains current inspection records in the asset management data base.
- Coordinates activities with the CTA Steel Fabrication Shop for the fabrication of structural components and repairs. Inspects and reviews the various stages of structural component fabrication.
- Assists the Senior Manager in the development and administration of structure maintenance department standards as well as the sections policies goals and objectives.
- Reviews structure maintenance drawings and specifications of Authority projects and outside construction projects interfacing with CTA structures.
- Assists in the development and administration of various CTA Capital Construction and maintenance programs for the rail and bus systems and their related facilities.
- Represents the Authority at meetings of various consultants contractors governmental agencies and transit organizations.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

CHALLENGES
- Providing structural maintenance services in order to maintain 52.3 miles of elevated structure as well as 115 bridges and viaducts over streets highways and waterways along with 150 rail stations to keep the structures safe for the riding public.
- Interacting with a diverse workforce.
- Optimizing structural repair designs that are cost effective and constructible.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelors degree in Structural Engineering Civil Engineering or a related field plus eight 8 years of experience in the design construction and maintenance of structures and facilities or an equivalent combination of education and experience relating to this position.
- Registered Illinois Professional Engineer or Registered Illinois Structural Engineer preferred.
- Must possess a valid State of Illinois Drivers License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Requires sitting for extended periods of time standing visual acumen manual dexterity and fingering for working with computer keyboards.
- Must be able to walk the CTA rightofway (elevated structure ballast and subway) for extended distances in various weather conditions.
- Must be able to climb ladders and not affected by fear of height.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of technical requirements for structure maintenance such as American Railway Engineering Association structure standards (AREMA) American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and American Concrete Institute (ACI).
- Working knowledge of railroad and/or transit structure design and maintenance.
- Working knowledge of structural engineering principles methods and techniques.
- Working knowledge of construction materials methods and techniques.
- Working knowledge of municipal codes and ordinances as applied to the design construction and maintenance of transportation infrastructure track structures and facilities.
- Good research abilities attention to detail and problem solving skills.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Good critical thinking skills to assess how one change can affect the entire project.
- Intermediate skill using AutoCAD to create drawings as needed for structural repairs inspection documents and permitting.
- Intermediate skill using personal computer engineering applications and data management software.
- Ability to negotiate and resolve conflict.
- Ability to organize analyze interpret and evaluate moderately complex structural engineering problems and provide practical and cost effective solutions.
- Ability to work well with others.
- Ability to manage routine structural engineering projects.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- General office environment.
- Exposed to electrically energized conductors moving trains open deck tracks and other hazardous conditions when conducting site visits on or near the CTA rightofway.
- Travels within the Chicago Metropolitan area when conducting field inspections and meetings.
- Occasionally required to travel out of the Chicago Metropolitan area to meet with suppliers manufacturers other transit agencies etc.

POSITION SUMMARY
Plans supervises and coordinates personnel and activities involved in structural maintenance structure inspection and construction projects. Performs planning cost estimating and designing of various structural maintenance repair projects to ensure successful conclusion within scope schedule and budget.

Rate to be determined by applicants entered service date and service date in union jurisdiction of this classification.
