JOUR 2718 Communitycentred Journalism
Lecture Hour(s): 3
Course Description: Journalists sometimes struggle to establish trust and rapport in their own communities. The course introduces students to communitycentred journalism practice which includes actively and ethically engaging community organizations groups and/or individuals using collaborative and trustbuilding approaches. Students will also use Solutions Journalism an evidencebased practice to report on communitybased stories. The course immerses students in texts and discussions that require careful consideration of where trust advocacy objectivity and solutions fit into contemporary journalism practice.

Experience having taught at an undergraduate level within Journalism or adjacent fields for a min. of 1 semester.

JOUR 2740 Visual Journalism I
Lecture Hour(s): 3
Course Description: Student journalists in this course will develop and produce video and photobased news stories involving extensive practice in all facets of the story generation and production process. Work done in lectures and tutorials will focus on the goals and principles of digital media storytelling in the context of current journalism practice and contemporary technology.

Experience having taught at an undergraduate level within Journalism or adjacent fields for a min. of 1 semester.
Coursespecific experience required:
Ability to teach intermediate equipment and production such as Adobe Premiere Pro video camera operations lighting audio recording and editing and digital camera operation for photography in the form of aperture priority shutter priority and manual photography modes.
Experience preferred:
Journalism audio and video editorial experience.

The Faculty of Business Communication Studies & Aviation comprises the Bissett School of Business the School of Communication Studies and the Aviation Program. The Bissett School of Business offers a fouryear Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree with majors in accounting human resources general management (with concentrations in innovation and entrepreneurship social innovation). Students in the Bissett School of Business can take a fouryear Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree. The Aviation Program is housed in the Department of International Business Supply Chain and Aviation and offers a twoyear Aviation Diploma and the newly launched fouryear Bachelor of Aviation Management. Students in the School of Communications Studies take a fouryear Bachelor of Communication Studies (BComms) and can pursue majors in Broadcast Media Studies Information Design Journalism and Public addition to the two degrees and their majors students are offered a variety of minors concentrations and certificates to complement their major.
