The following duties are normal for this position but are not to be construed as exclusive or allinclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Performs duties and assignments in compliance with Johnston Police Department policies procedures and training and in accordance with federal state and local laws.

Performs general law enforcement and crime prevention duties; enforces laws and practices community policing; and responds to calls for the protection of life and property. Incumbents initially perform more routine duties assigned to positions in this class and work under close supervision. However as experience is gained incumbents are expected to perform the full range of duties as assigned with increasing independence.

Performs other related duties as required or directed

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES:

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and must meet all the requirements of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.

Applicant testing will be conducted onSaturday June 7th 2025 at 8:30 AM. Details on testing will be sent out to those who meet minimum qualifications. When submitting your application a copy of your drivers license needs to be submitted as an attachment.

A summary of the supplemental testing process is below and additional details will be provided to candidates selected for further consideration after the application and ranked through comprehensive practical skills assessment physical fitness testing and the written POST exam.


SUPPLEMENTALINFORMATION:
Cooper Physical Agility Test
The physical agility test includes Situps Pushups and a Oneandahalfmile run.

can be found here.The agility test is a pass/fail exam; you must pass all three sections.
If you have taken the physical agility test within the last six months prior to our testing date you or the testing agency may submit that data via email to
and request that it be used instead of testing again.

Written Exam National Police Officer Selection Test (POST)
The POST test is a 75minute timed test in four sections; mathematics reading comprehension grammar and incident report writing. The minimum passing score for the Johnston Police Department is 70 on each of the four sections of this exam. Candidates who have previously taken the POST test and have a valid test score on file (greater than 70 on each section within six months from our testing date) with Stanard and Associates may request to waive the exam and use their most recent test score. The Iowa Law Enforcement Academy requires the POST test. Failure to pass this test with a score of 70 or above will result in elimination from the hiring process. Practice tests are available online.

Oral Board Interviews
Upon successfully completing the PT and POST tests you will be screened for eligibility for an oral board interview.
The interview will likely consist of several members of the police department a Field Training Officer and Supervisory Staff.
The interview is comprised of questions relating to law enforcement. A prepared applicant should be able to reason through most questions based on reflection of the career choice and general life experiences.

Background Investigation
The Johnston Police Department will conduct an extensive investigation of your background. A detective will contact prior employers relatives and references. Information provided during these contacts may result in other individuals being contacted.
Your employment history credit status driving record and other pertinent information will all be examined. A criminal history check will also be made.

Polygraph Exam
As part of the background process you will be scheduled for a polygraph examination where you will be tested in several different background areas. In addition you will be asked to determine if you were honest with the background detective truthful on your application undetected criminal involvement traffic history illicit drug use illegal gambling habits and any other pertinent information discovered or revealed during the background investigation including employment and military history.

Psychological Evaluation
Each candidate is required to undergo a psychological exam to ensure that they possess the important personality traits needed to become an effective police officer.

Medical Evaluation
As part of the hiring process each candidate will be required to undergo a complete medical evaluation which will include a physical capacity profile.

Academy
Initial basic training will be conducted at an ILEA approved academy. In addition to the educational components there is also a fitness component. Recruits will be tested regularly and must meet not only the academic standard but a fitness standard as well. The recruit will be housed during the week in dormstyle living quarters but is free to go home on the weekends.

Field Training
After graduation from ILEA you would be placed in the departments field training program. This is a 3phase program where new officers will learn specifically how to become refined and more effective police officers. During this process you will be challenged and evaluated by a field training officer who has received specialized education to train new officers and evaluate their progress. Once you successfully pass all phases you will be released to solo patrol.
