Job Description

This position is for the full academic year.

THIS POSITION IS FOR UPPERCLASSMEN ONLY.

FRESHMEN ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR DEPARTMENT POSITIONS.


Expected hours of work per week: 5 15

Work Location & Hours: The Math Center Mills 381 9 am 5 pm 7 pm 11 pm


Qualifications for Position:

  • Math Major preparing to teach secondaryschool math preferred
  • Demonstrated excellence in math courses with completion of Calc III preferred
  • Good communication skills in general; and demonstrated ability to communicate math in particular
  • A delight with mathematics
  • Enthusiastic willingness to engage with others and to initiate such engagement
  • Demonstrated dependability
  • Ability to work some (of Mon Thurs) evenings until 11 pm
  • Ability to tutor Statistics Differential Equations Linear Algebra or Math for Educators a bonus

Expected Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follow routines for opening closing and maintaining the Math Center
  • Greet students as they enter or leave the Math Center
  • Tutor students in a variety of math courses
  • Review course material (including working homework problems) as necessary to be prepared to answer student questions and to gain more personal insight into the material

Resume skills development (NACE Competencies required by employers) to be developed

  • Career & SelfDevelopment by increasing understanding of concepts and problemsolving skills in mathematics.
  • Communicate clearly mathematical concepts and skills.
  • Critical Thinking to logically explain concepts and problemsolutions and clearly answer questions
  • Global Literacy shown by having a flexible and creative approach for students of different backgrounds and cultures
  • Leadership by modeling encouragement and perseverance for students to complete assignments to the best of their abilities
  • Professional conduct to carry out Math Center responsibilities and workshifts
  • Teamwork by pitching in to cover Math Center shifts when needed
  • Technology used to improve student learning and efficient Math Center operation
