Description of the Position: (Purpose of the Position):
The Digital Scholarship Intern (DSI) is a creative and research based position. Interns will assist in the responsibility for maintaining the celebrated Digital Scholarship Center at St. Olaf (DiSCO) under the supervision of a team of instructional technologists and librarians.
Summer interns will support a variety of essential tasks to include maintenance of spaces and equipment inventory and audits multimedia documentation and aiding the technologist and librarian support of Summer research programs such as CURI and Steen Fellowships.
Transferable Skills:
Work may include developing online course modules publishing eTexts creating digital maps and data visualizations analyzing texts with digital tools creating digital collections and archives presenting online exhibits developing multimedia projects and documentation and more.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary duties for the Digital Humanities and Media Intern will be to support faculty staff and students in integrating technology into research curriculum and other projects. The students will work in the Digital Scholarship Center at St. Olaf located in Rolvaag Memorial Library.
As the DiSCO is a public library space management of the DiSCO area computers labs equipment and workspaces as well maintaining a strong customer service ethic are key components to the position. DiSCO interns will be called upon to work in public areas and be available to assist general library patrons and DiSCOspecific clients alike. Applicants with excellent written and verbal communication skills positive demeanor and demonstrated problemsolving skills are strongly preferred.
Students who can work the entire summer and who have outstanding demonstrated experience in DiSCO technologies and skills will be preferred.
Qualifications: (Education/Experience/Skills)
Desired Qualifications
- Demonstrated skills in two or more of the technical areas below as well as an aptitude and interest in learning new creative technologies:
- GIS and mapping (ArcGIS Google Earth)
- Audio and video recording and editing (Audacity Garageband iMovie Final Cut Pro)
- Graphic design and image manipulation (Adobe Photoshop Illustrator)
- Wordpress web publishing and/or Omeka web exhibitions and/or Elevator collections
- Tablets smartphones and mobile learning (iPads and Android tablets)
- Data manipulation programming (Javascript Python and R) and database management
- Data visualization or digital storytelling (tableau infographics motion graphics)
- Computer science Art background
- Experience providing training or support to people with varying levels of technical expertise.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Formal Project Management (Asana Trello Taiga kanban scrum etc)
