Job Description

Position Overview:

MNL is a fullservice ecological restoration company. We provide decades of experience knowledge industry leadership and a variety of services. Our services range from backyard native seeding to largescale restoration bioengineering and everything in between.


MNLs Greenhouse division is proud to have produced and provided millions of native perennials to be introduced into local ecosystems. On an annual basis our passionate team will seed grow and distribute 200 species each of which fit a unique and valuable niche in developing habitats. A position as Greenhouse Production Supervisor at MNL will provide handson experience in the production and distribution of native plants while working in an outdoor and greenhouse setting alongside a supportive team of native plant enthusiasts.


Due to the seasonal nature of the greenhouse industry in Minnesota applicants should expect and plan for scheduled periods of furlough during the Winter season and periods of available and encouraged overtime during the Spring season.


Duties and Responsibilities:

The Greenhouse Production Supervisors primary responsibility is to oversee the Production team in the creation and maintenance of a robust native plant inventory. This position requires a knack for problem solving inventiveness task management selfmotivation leadership skills and a passion for native plants and habitat restoration.


Duties include:

  • Direct staff in each stage of the plant production cycle including but not limited to:
    • Seed sowing and stratification
    • Plant upsizing (transplanting)
    • Watering plant trimming weeding and other maintenance
    • Routine restocking of retail ready inventory
  • Develop procedural techniques to improve efficiency in production processes
  • Manage staff in aspects relating but not limited to:
    • Hiring scheduling performance reviews conflict mitigation etc.
  • Monitor onsite inventory relative to confirmed and speculative demand and verify accuracy of this data to best assist sales and fulfillment staff
  • Monitor production thresholds and timelines and develop plans to successfully meet necessary quotas
  • Apply unique skills and experience to aid in trialing new species or plant rearing techniques and assist in development of reliable production lines for these pursued new species
  • Collect and analyze data to be used for such objectives as:
    • Decreasing production time mortality and input cost
    • Increasing available species diversity and quality of finished product
    • Improve forecasting of applicable metrics
  • Assist in developing Integrated Pest Management and Fertigation programs while maintaining records in accordance with Department of Agriculture
  • Utilize manual and automated infrastructural features to maintain optimal growing conditions. Such features include:
    • Furnaces Fans Ventilation Sprinklers Injectors Shade Cloth etc
  • Assist in other duties as assigned
    • Order fulfillment: assembling and packaging orders attending live plant sales
    • Facilities maintenance: construction and repair of new and existing facilities and equipment
    • Seed division: field maintenance harvesting seed processing etc

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with plant development and greenhouse facilities
  • Experience and interest in native plants and ecosystems
  • Experience in directing a team and managing staff
  • Degree in Agronomy Horticulture Ecology Botany or other applicable fields
  • Ability to create and utilize digital spreadsheets and solve mathematical problems
  • Ability to navigate Microsoft suite email and other applicable applications
  • Ability to keep detailed records and follow regulations according to MN Dept of Agriculture
  • Chemical Applicators License or ability to acquire one within 30 days
  • Experience in skid steer or other equipment operation or interest in learning
  • Ability to perform physical labor and work in adverse weather conditions
  • Valid drivers license and means of transportation
  • Personal smartphone device and active phone plan
  • Ability to maintain regular work schedule. Some weekend work is to be expected though our goal is to maintain a comfortable and fulfilling worklife balance

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Prolonged periods of time standing
  • Prolonged periods of time moving/lifting/transporting inventory
  • Prolonged periods of office and administrative work
  • Able to bend stretch push pull and reach
  • Must be able to work in greenhouse conditions as well as in varying weather conditions including heat cold rain and snow
