Job Description

We are the Metropolitan Council the regional government for the sevencounty Twin Cities metropolitan area. We plan 30 years ahead for the future of the metropolitan area and provide regional transportation wastewater and housing services.More information about us on our website.

Risk Management is responsible for identifying and evaluating the Councils exposure to loss through risk control and risk financing methods. The department develops recommends and implements appropriate risk management strategies and programs to protect the agency from the adverse impact of loss. It also selfadministers all auto liability and workers compensation claims.

How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

ThePrincipal Administrative Specialistprovides advanced administrative support with limited supervision with a specific focus on the assignments and workflow of liability and workers compensation claims to ensure compliance with department and State standards and procedures.

This position is eligible for a hybrid (both remote and onsite) telework arrangement. The candidates permanent residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Any of the following combinations of completed education (in business administration office administration or related field) and administrative work experience:

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):
  • Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe.
  • Recent administrative experience (within the last two years).
  • Experience navigating multiple software applications.
  • Experience in risk management healthcare or insurance industries.
  • Experience with medical terminology.
  • Experience working with the Labor EDI (electronic data interchange) system.
  • Experience working with diverse populations of internal and external customers.
What knowledge skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office and creating complex spreadsheets PowerPoint presentations and database management (Idash WAM ORIGAMI Application Extender SOS TransitMaster Data Serve IRS Tin Matching Rising Medical Solutions PeopleSoft DOLI Campus DMV Word Excel and PowerPoint Share File and Adobe).
  • Ability to create and develop complex forms and template documents.
  • Skills in providing effective accurate courteous and professional customer service.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents administrative policies department guidelines and operational procedures.
  • Ability to perform under limited supervision recognizing when assistance or guidance is required.
  • Ability to display independent judgment initiative and organization in solving a variety of problems.
  • Experience in contributing to a diverse equitable inclusive and respectful workplace
  • Strong and accurate data entry skills.
  • Strong detail orientation.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of racial and social equity and an ability to participate in conversations about race and equity in Risk Management communications.

What your work environment would be:
You would perform your work in a standard office setting. Work may sometimes require travel between your primary work site and other sites.

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council you must pass a background check which verifies education employment and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a casebycase basis based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.

If you are already an employee of the Metropolitan Council you must pass a criminal background check if the job youre applying for is safety sensitive is a supervisory or management job is in the Finance Information Services Audit or Human Resources departments or has access to financial records files/databases cash vouchers or transit fare cards. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the position.
