Job Duties
VDOTs Culpeper Location & Design Team has an exciting career opportunity for a Roadway Design Engineer. Successful candidate will be responsible for designing and producing plans for a wide range of transportation projects using OpenRoads Designer MicroStation and other computer design software.
As an Engineer Roadway Design your core responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Develop and review subcomponents and complete roadway designs using automated engineering and design software from scoping to advertisement for a wide range of transportation projects.
Demonstrates customer service and work habits that reflect the VDOT Values and coordinates the flow of information both orally and in writing.
Analyze and interpret engineering data and information. Prepare complete clear and concise reports and recommendations.
Complete roadway design tasks in MicroStation GeoPak Igrds PPMS PCES and other nonCADD applications.
Plan schedule and coordinate engineering program activities such that deliverables are met within the established scope and timeline.
Manage special program initiatives and projects as assigned. Serve and represent VDOT or assigned program area on various committees and work groups.
Use established VDOT policies and procedures in the development and delivery of engineering projects. Engineering projects are completed in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
Establish an effective line of communication between VDOT contractors government agencies and the public. Investigate issues and resolve complaints.
Assist in the management of projects and tasks including development of and managing the scope schedule budget deliverables change management quality and status reports
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences.
Experience in roadway design criteria construction methods standards specifications and materials.
Experience applying design standards specifications policies and procedures.
Experience applying civil engineering principles as they relate to roadway design and standard design technical knowledge.
Skill in building networks and relationships with employees field personnel contractors manufacturers and FHWA representatives.
Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include engineering and design software.
Ability to plan and schedule work.
Skill in delivering exemplary customer service
Knowledge of principles of roadway safety that impact roadway standards and special designs.
Additional Considerations
Experience in roadway design and project management for transportation projects.
A combination of training experience or education in Civil Engineering or related field desired.
Engineering in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
