Job Description

Primary Purpose

To assist economically and educationally disadvantaged youth to achieve school success graduate from high school and enroll in postsecondary education. To contribute to the accomplishment of TRIO precollege project objectives.

*This position is contingent on Grant Funding AND is contingent on the Needs of the School Districts*

***THIS POSITION IS LOCATED AT COQUILLE HIGH SCHOOL***

Description of Essential Functions

Outreach 50 of Time)

  1. Establish and maintain positive liaison with administration faculty and staff in target school(s).
  2. Recruit participants through various means including presentations and obtain required information to document eligibility.
  3. Develop and implement after school curriculum and lesson plans according to established calendar of services.
  4. Facilitate individual small group and large group contacts with students and parents.
  5. Support participants through the implementation activities and provide services (as delineated in the grant) to enhance school success increase retention and graduation rates and facilitate postsecondary enrollment and completion in target school(s).
  6. Accompany participants on field trips to sights of career and cultural interest and college campuses for student visitations.

Program Support 25 of Time)
  1. Develop promotional materials for activities and events. Contribute to newsletters as directed.
  2. Maintain current working knowledge of TRIO federal regulations and legislation.
  3. Assess and evaluate participant eligibility needs and outcomes.
  4. Communicate regularly with the Educational Talent Search/Upward Bound project director to implement program priorities and achieve project goals.

Record Keeping 25 of Time)
  1. Complete a needs assessment for each participant in cooperation with the student parent/guardians and school counselor(s).
  2. Enter and maintain records of all services and activities in the designated confidential database for each participant assigned.
  3. Monitor service contacts for students to ensure that participants receive at least the minimal number of required supports.
  4. Maintain timelines and deadlines.
  5. Participate in budget planning as it relates to student activities when appropriate.

Performs Other Duties and Special Projects as Required/Assigned
  1. Attend meetings and training sessions as directed and when not in conflict with the target school.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors degree in Education Human Services Sociology Psychology or a comparable field is required and/orfive5 years or more work experience in similar programs and current enrollment in a Bachelors degree program may be considered in lieu of Bachelors degree.

A minimum of two 2 years experience in providing direct support services to economically and/or educationally disadvantaged youth.

Verifiable experience in needs assessment verification of eligibility for services and accurate detailed continual record keeping is highly desired.

Successful applicants for this position must possess the following knowledge skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation:
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing using the English language with or without the use of an interpreter. Ability to effectively communicate orally with groups and/or individual and deal with peers the public and the community in a positive empathetic and professional manner.
  • Knowledge of college systems of a sufficient level to advise high school students in the knowledge skills and attitudes requisite for success in postsecondary courses and programs.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and work independently to accomplish those procedures.
  • Ability and willingness to manage a flexible work schedule with selfdiscipline including travel various hours and possible weekends/evenings as well as work days at other college locations.
  • A level of computer literacy sufficient to use software such as word processing spreadsheets and data bases to produce correspondence documents and reports as required by the position.
  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives and abilities. Sensitivity to barriers faced by students from economically and/or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Ability to consistently convey a pleasant and helpful attitude by using excellent interpersonal and communication skills to control sometimes stressful and emotional situations. Requires sufficient communication and human relations skills to resolve complaints/issues defuse anger and gain cooperation.
  • Ability to conduct student outreach activities in small and large group settings.
  • Knowledge of materials techniques and resources necessary to assist eligible participants of all ages to overcome barriers and find means to achieve their potential through education.
  • Strict adherence and understanding of Federal State and Community College confidentiality rules and regulations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for this position possessing one or more of the following knowledge skills and abilities with receive preferred consideration through the selection process.
  • Masters degree in one of the fields listed above or a comparable field.
  • Experience working with federally funded educational grant programs; experience teaching or counseling disadvantaged students.
  • As required by program criteria preference will be given to candidates that have experienced the same types of issues and barriers as the programs target population.
  • Experience working within the public school system
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSES/LICENSE
Current or must obtain within six 6 months of hire a valid Oregon drivers license. Must meet the Colleges requirements associated with driving campus vehicles.
