Position Description:
The Aftercare Nurse Student Support is responsible for coordinating student health needs and providing health services to students participating in aftercare programming and activities as outlined by the Jefferson Parish School Board the Louisiana Department of Education the Louisiana State Board of Nursing and the Louisiana Office of Public Health (OPH).The schools that offer aftercare programs are located throughout the district. Aftercare School nurse(s) shall be expected to fulfill duties traditionally expected of those in the nursing profession performing nursing tasks consistent with educational preparation commensurate with certification/licensure. The operational information is as follows: Monday through Friday work hours 3:00p6:00p onsite at a district location with an operational aftercare program.
Reports To: Director of Health Services
Scope of Responsibility:
- The nurse will adhere to and enforce the La. Nurse Practice Act federal regulations state statutes school board policies and administrative directives and perform the following duties as required under the circumstances along with the completion of all corresponding documents forms and reports.
- It is the responsibility of the aftercare nurse to be present on site at working with students and staff at a district aftercare location each day.
- The aftercare nurse will develop a routine that involves visiting each aftercare site in a rotational manner; reporting the monthly calendar to the Director of Health Services.
- Evaluates the health status of students at the assigned school by performing health screenings tests and physical assessments and interprets/communicates findings to students parents/guardians and school personnel.
- Provides direct nursing care to students by administering medication surveying immunization compliance first aid emergency health care and nursing care prescribed by a medical provider.
- Observes students on a regular basis to monitor illness and provide early detection of communicable diseases child abuse chronic illness and/or physical defects.
- Responsible for delegating nursing care and training teachers and staff to perform noncomplex student health procedures in accordance with state regulations and students individualized healthcare plans emergency action plans or specific health needs legally and safely delegated to nonmedical personnel.
- Provide training and support that is necessary for preparing personnel to respond to student health needs or health emergencies.
- Responds to medical emergency situations of adult staff and students for the purpose of addressing immediate safety concerns.
- Provide afterschool program staff education on health related topics and ensure that staff are available onsite who are certified in CPR and first aid.
- Act as a liaison between day school nurses and afterschool programs to ensure everyone is aware of students medical needs.
- Serve as a health resource for educators and administrators
- Performs first aid on students or staff who are ill or injured and refer those with suspected health problems to the appropriate health agency.
Skills and Qualifications:

- Associate or Bachelors degree in nursing with two 2 years of clinical nursing experience.
- Certification as a School Nurse as described in Bulletin 746 of the Louisiana Department of Education.
- Current certification in CPR.
- Working knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations as well as school system regulations regarding schools.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and skilled in Google Suite.
- Strong written and oral communication skills with an ability to use quantitative and qualitative data to make decisions and recommendations.
- A high degree of professionalism with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities while consistently demonstrating sound judgment and disciplined thinking.
- Ability to work collaboratively with team members.
- Possesses knowledge skills and expertise required for assessing planning coordinating implementing and evaluating student healthcare needs so that all students may fully participate in aftercare programming and activities.

Physical Involvement:
Sitting is required most of each workday. Must be able to operate office equipment. Standing walking reaching bending lifting up to 10 pounds is sometimes required. Ability to provide own transportation to schools work locations and meeting sites. Mobility skills necessary to access a variety of work locations including locations not on the ground floor.
