Position Summary
The Communications Associate is responsible for enhancing and elevating the universitys reputation by supporting the Communications & Public Relations teams strategies and objectives and spearheading daytoday efforts and outputs. As the Communications Associate this position is responsible for drafting and editing accurate and timely information that reflects the universitys official positions including but not limited to press releases pitch materials media briefings as well as communications landscape research and analysis.
The Communications Associate will also be a strategic partner and collaborator in shaping the universitys communications and public relations strategies and campaigns to promote a positive institutional image increase visibility and exposure reinforce brand narratives and increase engagement.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Public and Media Relations the Communications Associate will be a critical asset to the Marketing Communications and External Relations team providing communications support and counsel interfacing with media and university leaders and contributing to the overall visibility of the university through effective communications and public relations that reach internal and external university audiences.
Position Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities
Management and Team Support
- Contribute to and execute the universitys public and media relations strategies with support and oversight from the team.
- Write and edit content such as public statements news advisories press releases articles media pitches and other externally focused communications.
- Support media relations with timely dissemination of university news proactive pitching efforts peer assessment and media landscape research and analysis.
- Develop and maintain editorial schedules production calendars media relations collateral media tracking and general organization of MarComm materials.
- Collaborate with the Public & Media Relations team to develop PR and earned media strategies for university visibility and reputation building through proactive campaigns media planning and marketing and branding opportunities.
- Serve as point of contact to external and media stakeholders including the university student newspaper current and potential media partners and journalists and/or vendors and partners collaborating with the Public & Media Relations team.
- Coordinate responses to inquiries comments and other feedback from the general public.
- Monitor ongoing media coverage and the changing highereducation landscape and compile regular reports.
- Cultivate relationships with MarComm colleagues to increase integration and collaboration of efforts and outputs.
- Support issues and crisis communications planning and response as needed.
- Ensure highquality errorfree work while supporting the team and leadership in delivering materials accurately and on time.

Public and Media Relations Strategy and Planning
- Maximize the universitys exposure and visibility by supporting and executing external communications strategies that: cultivate the universitys relationships with the media engage target audiences increase favorable news coverage decrease unfavorable news coverage and boost brand awareness.
- Contribute to and advance the Public & Media Relations teams goals of increased proactive media opportunities and overall university visibilitysupported by media relations executive visibility and thought leadership conferences/events and awards strategy and collaboration with digital and social teams.
- Track and monitor press coverage media contacts and project/campaign success metrics; develop reports and recaps of key department efforts.
- Cultivate an ongoing awareness of the media and communications landscape leading research in support of projects and emerging initiatives and staying current on trends and best practices within the digital and social media landscape.
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested by leadership.

Requisite Qualifications
- Bachelors degree preferably in communications journalism business management or a related field.
- Minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in communications public relations or related roles.
- Strong writing editing and research skills with an affinity for storytelling.
- Solid grasp of public relations tools media outreach strategies and traditional and digital communication channels.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to craft clear persuasive and polished content.
- Proven ability to interpret and synthesize large amounts of data in a fastpaced multitasked environment.
- Proactive selfstarter with excellent organizational project management and problemsolving skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines adapt to change and manage multiple requests with attention to detail and quality.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a teamoriented outcomedriven environment.
