The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seekinga Highway Maintenance Worker 2 inVancouver WA to support the Traffic Control Crew. Under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3 this journeylevel position is a member of the Work Zone Traffic Control Team (WZTCT) for the Southwest Region. This position is responsible for set up and removal of all types of traffic control required for maintenance and emergency operations. The types of traffic control consist of long term short term stationary and mobile. This position gives assistance to other region wide crews in maintaining signs durable pavement markings and striping. This position may work with general maintenance operations on other roadway and roadside maintenance activities and assists with snow and ice control as well as clean up during and from a storm event. This is an intraining opportunitythat offers a career path handson learning and mentorship and allows you to progress upward through the Highway Maintenance Worker series and achieve the goal class of a Highway Maintenance Worker 2. This opportunity is perfect for someone who enjoys working with their hands knowing their work is done on roadways and in a variety of weather conditions.


What to Expect

A typical schedule is Monday through Thursday 40hours per week for 4 10hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to nonscheduled callout emergencies. HMW2 may work alternate and emergency shifts as assigned and respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day 7 days a week alone or a part of a team as needed. Rotational night shift is required.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within these roles you will:

  • Perform work zone traffic control and general maintenance
  • Design and set up traffic control for all operations; as well as full road or bridge closures according to departmental and MUTCD standards.
  • Follow safety rules and regulations on all work zone and flagging sites including placing signs barricades traffic cones and other warning devices.
  • Perform traffic control such as manually flag traffic or signing for lane closures road closures and detours.
  • Conduct moving and stationary traffic control operations using attenuator/buffer truck.
  • Drainage maintenance including catch basins sedimentation facilities and ditches; erosion and slide repair; sign maintenance and repair; guardrail fence and impact attenuator installation and repair.
  • Remove litter on state rightofway; remove dead animals and debris from roadways.
  • Account for inventory and inventories highway section.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment and hand tools which includes sharpening power saws and chains washing vehicles and greasing tools and equipment etc.
  • Lead and train others in the absence of the Highway Maintenance Worker 3.
  • Effectively use radio phone computers and electronic devices to communicate and document data.
  • Negotiate rough and steep surfaces during the performance of job tasks.
  • Respond to call out emergencys day night weekends and holidays as needed.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:

  • One 1 year of experience performing roadway maintenance heavy equipment operation or related experience such as farming timber operations or construction.
  • Possession of a Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions or the ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • Obtain and/or maintain valid certifications in Flagging within 6 months of hire.
  • The ability to transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • The ability to respond to emergency call outs work different and/or extended shifts on short notice (days nights and weekends) and perform standby duty.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station for an afterhours call within 45 minutes.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions confined spaces uneven terrain and next to fast high volume highway traffic.
  • Ability to traverse steep rough and uneven terrain; work at heights above 25ft over land or water; work in heat and around hot asphalt.
  • Ability to operate Class A B and C equipment w/current technology in highway maintenance operations.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate or equivalent
  • Two 2 years experience in planning setting signs and devices flagging and performing other types of traffic control on multilane high speed highway.
  • Two 2 years as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or comparable work experience. Such as performing roadway maintenance heavy equipment operation or related experience such as farming timber operations or construction.
