Job Description

JOB GOAL:

To advance the colleges mission vision principles values and strategic initiatives through continuous improvement decisions.

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

The instructor is responsible for fostering student learning through effectively teaching coursework in the area of areas of Paramedic and general health courses for the Health Sciences department. Required course load is 36 credit hours per academic year (fall spring and summer semester). This position will involve days and may involve evenings and/or weekends with a varying schedule between classroom lab and clinic focused teaching. The faculty must develop implement and evaluate instruction and report and record student achievement in assigned courses in accordance with department division and college policies and procedures. Teaching responsibilities include lecture laboratory and clinical practice settings. Responsibilities will also include mentoring and remediation of current students and providing assistance in development and implementation of departmental initiatives.

Teaching schedule will be assigned by the dean. In addition to teaching responsibilities the instructor will be expected to contribute professional expertise through nonteaching activities to the department program and college. The instructor will be responsible for meeting the goals and objectives of an individual Professional Preparation Plan as outlined by the Colleges Quality Faculty Plan.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be able and willing to deliver courses as required by the college.
  • Effectively organize prepare and teach assigned courses in accordance with established syllabi to students with varying backgrounds and abilities and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback on a regular basis.
  • Utilize the Kirkwood Learning Management System to post course syllabi and relevant documents and provide access to student grade book.
  • Maintain a minimum of five office hours per week and be available on an asneeded basis for student questions and discussions regarding their performance.
  • Participate in curriculum development revision and assessment activities at course program department and college levels.
  • Engage in program administrative tasks related to program directing duties and/or clinic coordination.
  • Lead collaborate and participate in review and assurance of compliance with accreditation reviews as required by specialized accreditors and the state.
  • Knowledge of National EMS scope of practice National EMS standards and evidence informed clinical practice.
  • Discuss program career transfer options and other college services with students to support informed academic decisions.
  • Participate in the development and/or of departmental and college tasks projects and goals.
  • Engage in continuous quality review and improvement of the educational program.
  • Provide academic oversight including curriculum planning and development.
  • Provide Orientation/Training and supervision of clinical and capstone filed internship preceptors.
  • Maintain relationships with K12 transfer and community and/or industry partners.
  • Work collaboratively with Continuing Education (CE) on EMS and AHA offerings.
  • Regularly engage in professional development activities and actively seek information about developing trends and ideas.
  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves working in an office clinical lab or simulation setting. Frequent 3470 standing pushing pulling lifting and grasping. Frequent 3466 reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant 67100 sitting walking repetitive motion talking and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors degree
  • Experience as an emergency provider with evidence of current practice.
  • Iowa EMS instructor endorsement or ability to obtain prior to start date.

LICENSES CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Current statecertification as a paramedic.
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • BLS
  • Ability to obtain PHTLS & AMLS within the first 12 months.
  • Obtain Instructor endorsement for ACLS PALS BLS PHTLS and AMLS within the first year.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS LICENSES CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Masters degree
  • Completion of NAEMSE Instructor Course
  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)
  • Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS)
