Job Description

Special Education Elementary Teacher 2025/2026

Location:

Memorial Elementary

Job Goal:

The special education teacher coordinates and provides programming for children with disabilities instruction in academic social language motor selfregulation leisure and life skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

1 Assess the capabilities and skills of each assigned student for instruction and seek means to assist each student in learning

effectively in the area assigned.

2 Design and implement programs using pullout/inclusion for students eligible to receive Special Education services.

  1. This includes but is not limited to academic social/emotional behavioral and activities of daily living
  2. Collect data and use data to create specially designed plans and guide instruction

3 Conduct evaluations under the Special Education Laws and in such a manner as to:

  1. Review the educationally relevant information on students;
  2. Design and administer a relevant learning style and achievement assessment battery;
  3. Prepare a written report of findings;
  4. Summarize assessment findings and recommend pertinent educational strategies/programming at the TEAM meeting which contributes to the development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  5. Attend TEAM meetings of students evaluated.

4 Complete the paperwork process associated with special education including but not limited to the development of IEPs

timelines and progress reports.

5 Advise and assist teachers in the diagnostic and remedial measures and specific procedures used in overcoming learning

difficulties or social maladjustments of students. Provides/implements modifications of curriculum materials to address the

learning difficulties of students.

  1. Oversee instructional assistants assigned to your Program
    1. Create their schedules to support students
    2. Train instructional assistants on student plans and programs
    3. Collaborate with instructional assistants to develop activities and lessons around targeted skills
  2. Collaborate with general education teachers social workers Team Chairpersons School Psychologists specialists other related service providers and outside agencies consulting with your program to support your students overall developmental areas

6 Prepare and maintain such records as required or necessary to facilitate a flow of information among staff and others.

7 Communicate/consult with parents so as to:

  1. Keep parents informed of student progress;
  2. Involve parents to the maximum extent possible in efforts directed at IEP goal attainment and student success.

8 Develop a personal plan for professional development in collaboration with the Building Principal and Director of Special

Education.

9 Attend all professional meetings that are scheduled by the Superintendent of Schools or Director of Special Education or building Principal.

10 Ensure that all Massachusetts Special Education Regulations are followed and implemented.

11 Perform any other duties as requested by the Director of Special Education and/or building team chair.

Requirements:

  • Masters degree in special education preferred.
  • DESE certification in moderate special needs required.
  • OG certification preferred
  • Good organizational and communication skills experience in delivering coteaching 1:1 and small group instruction.
  • A minimum of three 3 years of experience working with children diagnosed with disabilities as well as leadership experience/skills.

Compensation:

In accordance with the Burlington Educators Association Unit A contract
