These positions are flexibly staffed. While we will hire a Firefighter EMT at the lowest level we will prioritize those applicants with the higher levels of EMT and Firefighter certifications. If employed at a lower level automatic promotion to the next level in the flex series will occur once a higherlevel certification is acquired.
WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
CCFR provides 24/7 emergency response for the City and Borough of Juneau. All permanent fulltime positions work 24hour shifts and live at the station during their shift. CCFR has two livein stations the Juneau station located in downtown Juneau and the Glacier station located near the Juneau International Airport. In addition we have Douglas Auke Bay and Lynn Canal Stations.

Typical Responsibilities
- Quickly respond to a variety of emergencies and perform rescue activities. Extinguish fires and render emergency medical care and assistance to those in need or crisis.
- Search and rescue people from fires and other emergencies which may involve carrying children injured infirm or frightened people from burning buildings; locate and dig out people trapped in tunnels pipes or excavations; rescue people trapped on cliffs ledges etc.; perform water or ice rescues; and evacuate people from hazardous spills/areas of contamination by chemicals gas etc.
- Respond quickly to alarms/pagers be able to put on protective clothing rapidly and load necessary equipment onto the apparatus.
- Assesses properties on fire such as smell and color of smoke to determine what is burning what equipment and extinguishing agents to use and what protective gear to wear; assesses effects of weather wind humidity and other conditions on the fire; assesses best route for evacuation and access to the fire scene; and relay information to responding firefighters.
- Listen relay and follow the verbal orders of the Fire Chief/Incident Commander at the scene.
- Evaluate whether entry into the burning structure is feasible; force open doors windows or gates; and break or cut into walls roofs or fences to gain access to fire or to search area.
- Check operate and maintain generators air compressors breathing apparatus light plants rescue equipment and other specialized firefighting/rescue equipment and tools. Maintain records and prepare reports on equipment tests usage and fire and ambulance incidents.
- Operate ambulance and other related emergency equipment. Assess the general condition of the injured individual by noting vital signs pupil dilation respiration skin temperature alertness and mental orientation.
- Administer necessary emergency care to stabilize a patient for transport; administer CPR; administer intravenous fluids and medications to a patient on instruction from medical personnel; check victims at the scene for medic alert symbols or emblems; and transport the patient to ambulance or emergency vehicle with special care to avoid further injury.
- Aircraft firefighting and rescue duties including airportspecific response procedures under the Federal Aviation Administration and other applicable state or federal regulations. If assigned may be required to drive ARFF apparatus.
- May be required to travel in aircraft and watercraft to provide emergency medical services. When properly trained may be required to respond to and perform specialized skills in technical rescue responses such as hazmat rope or confined space.
- Participate in required training to maintain and enhance firefighting and emergency medical knowledge and skill; attend classes in first aid emergency medical techniques firefighting equipment etc.; learn and practice new methods; and participate in drills.
- Deal with the public in emergency and normal daytoday operations professionally providing education and service.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School graduation or a valid GED certificate.
Other: Not less than 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
A valid Alaska Drivers License at the time of appointment and for continued employment.
Certification (s): Certification as a State of Alaska Firefighter I or an equivalent certification as determined by the Fire Chief.
Certification as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician I or higher.
NOTE: Appointment to a Firefighter EMT position will be made conditionally pending successful completion of all portions of the psychological assessment Physical Agility Test and medical evaluation.
Continued employment and advancement opportunities:
Continued employment requires completion of the onthejob training program meeting or exceeding performance standards and the following conditions:
EMT I: Within twelve 12 months of appointment fulltime employees must obtain and maintain certification as a State of Alaska EMT II.
EMT II: Must have a valid EMT II certification upon appointment and for continued employment.
EMT III: Must have a valid EMT III certification upon appointment and for continued employment.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This recruitment will be used to create an eligible list to fill current and future vacancies which may occur within the next twelve months subject to an interview and reevaluation of the candidates current job performance. At the discretion of the Fire Chief the eligible list may be extended up to one year from the effective date. The City and Borough of Juneau may revise or change the examinations or examining procedure at any time during the period and require candidates to meet the revised examination procedures or pass the revised examinations to maintain eligibility for appointment.

ADDITIONAL TESTINGSuccessful candidates must pass Phase 1 of the selection process by meeting the minimum qualifications outlined below passing an oral board passing professional reference checks and passing a criminal background check. Once this is accomplished they will move to Phase 2 of the selection process where they must pass a psychological evaluation pass a physical fit for duty medical exam and pass a physical agility test.
