About the In House Substitute Teacher Role

The In House Substitute Teacher position is a oneyear role that supports classroom instruction by providing class coverage when teachers are absent and assisting the lead teacher with instruction and classroom management when coverage is not needed.

This position continues through the end of the 202526 school year. At the end of the school year In House Substitute Teachers may interview for or be offered the role of Capital Teaching Resident Lead Teacher or another role at their school or another KIPP DC school. As the In House Substitute Teacher role is a one year role a position for the following school year is not guaranteed. This role is an exempt position and will report to the principal of the In House Substitute Teachers assigned school.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the substitute in a classroom when a teacher is absent by delivering internalized lessons and maintaining a positive classroom culture
  • Assist lead teachers with instruction classroom culture and administrative duties when substituting is not required
  • Build trusting relationships with scholars families and colleagues
  • Implement schoolwide student culture policies within classrooms and everywhere on campus
  • Conduct purposeful observations of excellent lead teachers
  • Participate in regular meetings with teachers and leaders grade level meetings and network wide professional development
  • Take on additional responsibilities throughout the school as needed
  • While students receive instruction from 8:00 am3:30 pm KIPP DC In House Substitutes are on duty in school Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm two times a week and 7:30 am to 4:00 pm three times a week.
  • Assist with arrival/dismissal support cafeteria and hallway duty etc.
  • Provide toileting and/or diapering for students as needed

Qualifications

  • Completed 60 college credit hours or more in lieu of a conferred degree
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited institution all majors accepted (Preferred)
  • Experience working with PreK12th grade students (Preferred)
  • A belief that all students have the right to a high quality education where educators play an integral role in providing support so that all students can succeed
  • Unquestioned integrity and commitment to KIPP DCs mission and to advancing its antiracist ambition through their work with staff students alumni and families
  • Successful track record of collaboratively working and building relationships with a wide range of people
  • Receives and reflects on feedback while demonstrating an eagerness to grow
  • Flexibility and positivity to take on new responsibilities when needed
  • A strong record of professionalism

Compensation and Benefits:

In House Substitute Teachers will receive an annual salary of $45000 and a competitive benefits package

  • When it comes to compensation at KIPP DC we strive for clarity equity and to be highly competitive. Following the In House Substitute Teacher year In House Substitute Teachers may interview for or be asked to become Capital Teaching Residents $52000 Lead Teachers (starting at 65500 or another role at their school or another KIPP DC school. As the In House Substitute Teacher role is a one year role a position for the following school year is not guaranteed.
  • KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical dental and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability long term disability life insurance and a membership to One Medical.
  • KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3 employer contribution and a 3 match with vesting after three years.
  • Currently individuals in this role have up to 10 paid sick days 12 paid holidays paid Thanksgiving week break winter break spring break and summer break. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
  • All employees who use public transit through WMATA are eligible for pretax deductions for transportation costs.
