DSHS BHA Institution Counselor 3Safety & InterventionTrainer

The mission of Western State Hospital (WSH) is to promote recovery and wellbeing in partnership with the people we serve. In support and service of approximately the 900 patients their families and the communities of Washington State Organizational Development is responsible for the training and development education of approximately 2600 WSH employees. The Safety Trainer is a critical position supporting the hospitals priority area to effectively educate and model best practices for all hospital staff and reports to an Administrator in Organizational Development.

The Safety Trainer provides training and also instructional design/development upon direction. The incumbent is an advanced certified instructor and facilitator specializing in the education of the psychiatric hospitals safety and intervention identified trainings policies and practices. The Safety Trainer is responsible to educate employees enrolled in General New Employee Orientation Clinical New Employee Orientation Annual InService or other scheduled trainings as well as conduct ongoing and refresher training for all hospital employees as needed and directed.

Position responsibilities require superior communication and collaboration skills professionalism interpersonal effectiveness emotional intelligence at all times to engage and motive adult learning and ability to effectively deliver education across disciplines.

Position responsibilities require applicable experience and/or education understanding of behavior and patient engagement strategies and ability to effectively employ and train verbal deescalation strategies and physical safety techniques.

The Safety Trainer maintains current expert knowledge of WSH safety and intervention policy and procedures Nursing Standards and Federal and State regulations and is expected to maintain compliance with all credentialing requirements.

Some of what youll do:
  • Train and instruct an array of the hospitals approved initial and refresher education courses to psychiatric hospital employees in New Employee Orientation (NEO) Clinical Employee Orientation Annual InService CPR/BLS and as scheduled for current staff or as directed by circumstances identified for the needs of the hospital patients and employees. Delivery is expected to follow model fidelity and be instructed as the program was designed.
  • Plan and deliver quality education courses as indicated by the respective certification instructor guidelines curriculum or training of trainer. Training will be conducted across all shifts and may include but is not limited to the following courses or subjects: New Employee Orientation Clinical Employee Orientation Safety/Security Training Annual InService Training Restraint Application Situational Awareness Emergency and Radio Communications How to Conduct Fire Watch Personal Safety & Evasion Techniques Understanding Baseline Behavior Key Control and Use Badge Identification and Use BLS (CPR and First Aid).
  • Instruct and facilitate courses utilizing adult learning principles to engage motivate and enhance staff learning and comprehension.
  • Conduct checkins on NEO graduates to identify training needs training trends and offer opportunities to provide additional training.
  • As an educator and role model; demonstrate value based leadership for staff to engage motivate and support an 0ptimal learning experience. This will include communicating and demonstrating the mission of hospital teamwork philosophy of personcentered care and evidencedbased practices.
  • Following the completion of training; evaluate staff competency for acquired learning objectives of knowledge skills and abilities. Provide feedback and remedial training as needed to assist staff to demonstrated competency. Provide the Safety and Intervention Administrator with clear and concise documentation of staff barriers with recommendations for staff unable to demonstrate competency.
Who should apply

Incumbent must possess qualification from item 1 AND qualification from item 2 described below:

1. A Bachelors degree preferably involving major study in sociology or other social science.

AND

2. Two years of professional counseling or casework experience. One year of graduate training in behavioral social sciences may be substituted year for year for casework experience.

OR

One year as an Institution Counselor II.

Equivalent combination of education/experience

What were looking for:

  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Current certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI).
  • Advanced training in Instructor Development and/or Curriculum Design.
  • Two years of professional experience providing training education or coaching.
  • Ability to conduct training courses and presentations with fidelity in a variety of settings for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to facilitate groups; secure and maintain employee participant interest and cooperation; speak in public and write clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders employees department partners supervisory staff and line staff; working collaboratively across disciplines and establishing professional relationships.
