DEFINITION
Under the direction of the Director of Food Services receive heat store portion and serve food at an assigned school site in compliance with state and federal regulations; maintain kitchen equipment utensils and work areas in a clean and sanitary condition; train and provide work direction to student workers and other Food Service Workers as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Verify food deliveries to assure adequate quantities; request adjustments and additional items as needed.
- Heat or chill food as appropriate for serving.
- Set up and stock salad bar; restock items and dressings as needed.
- Supervise and train student helpers and others as assigned.
- Count items sold and served at lunch and nutrition.
- Maintain required records related to food served sales and inventory and food items left over.
- Prepare reports and forms regarding lunch sales and food/supply orders.
- Clean wash and sanitize food service equipment utensils serving areas and related facilities.
- Work with and around hazardous materials.
- May be required to participate in emergency clean up of hazardous materials spills.
- Estimate and order food supplies according to established menus and procedures
- Lock and secure kitchen facilities.
- Perform related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE
Knowledqe of:
- Sanitation practices related to the cooking and serving of food.
- Health and safety practices and procedures in kitchen areas.
- Record keeping procedures.
- Basic math skills
- Portion control techniques.
- Operation of commercial kitchen equipment.
- Proper serving temperatures and storage methods for various types of food.
- State and federal child nutrition regulations.
- Proper handling techniques of hazardous materials.
Ability to:
- Heat chill portion and serve bulkpack food according to established procedures and regulations.
- Assure the timely ordering receipt serving and cleanup of meals and food items at an assigned school site.
- Meet demanding schedules and time lines. Work effectively under rush conditions. Observe established health safety and sanitation regulations.
- Lift containers of food and other objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Train and provide work direction to student workers and others as assigned.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports orders and estimates.
- Establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships with others.
- Operate commercial kitchen equipment.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Work independently following established procedures with minimal supervision.
Training and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and two years large quantity food preparation experience.
Licenses:
Possession of a valid Certification as a Serve Safe Food Manager from a source approved by the County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health; possession of a valid California drivers license.
Working Conditions:
Kitchen environment; subject to temperature extremes standing for tong periods and lifting heavy objects.
