Position Summary:
The Director of Personalized CompetencyBased Learning (PCBL) leads a districtwide transformation of high school education to ensure all students graduate futureready through masterybased studentcentered learning. This position is centered upon the design and implementation of a flagship model PCBL environment at Weber Innovation High School for Grades 912 which will serve as the foundation for scaling personalized competencybased learning practices across the district.
In addition to this schoolbased transformation the Director is responsible for advancing a districtwide strategy that integrates digital learning equitydriven practices and multiple pathways to postsecondary success. This includes the revamping of the districts Early College High School model to align with the principles of PCBL expand student access and deepen partnerships with higher education and workforce entities. The Director will serve as a systemslevel leader instructional innovator and equity champion focused on ensuring every high school student is empowered through personalized meaningful and futureready learning experiences.
Key Responsibilities:
Visionary and Strategic Leadership & Planning
- Visionary & Inspired Leadership: Create communicate develop and lead a compelling districtwide vision and roadmap for implementing personalized competencybased learning (PCBL) at Weber Innovation High School and across all schools and grade levels that aligns with the districts mission and goals. - Alignment with District Strategic Plan: Collaborate with teaching and learning teams to align PCBL with the districts strategic plan equity initiatives and instructional frameworks.
- Implementation & Monitoring: Design and manage multiyear implementation plans including timelines milestones and progress monitoring systems.
- Change Management: Effectively guide the school/district through the implementation of personalized and competencybased learning practices supporting educators and students through this process.
Curriculum Instruction and Assessment
- Competency Framework Design: Lead the creation and refinement of competency frameworks that define the knowledge skills and abilities students must demonstrate at each stage of their learning journey.
- Curriculum Development: Partner with district teaching and learning leaders to develop flexible studentcentered curriculum models that allow for personalization of learning pathways promoting mastery of content at individual paces.
- Assessment Practices: Help to establish and maintain innovative formative and performancebased summative assessment strategies that assess student progress based on mastery of competencies rather than seattime.
- Learning Technology Integration: Identify and implement educational technologies that support personalized learning including data systems for tracking individual student progress and learning management platforms.
- Equity & Cultural Responsiveness: Ensure culturally responsive inclusive and equitable practices are embedded throughout PCBL implementation.
School Support & Capacity Building
- School Management and Restructure of School Model: Manage school operations including budget staffing scheduling course offerings and compliance with district and state policies and employ necessary restructuring initiatives to effectively align with the vision of a PCBL learning environment for all students grades 912.
- Recruit mentor and retain a dynamic and missionaligned team of educators.
- Capacity Building: Partner with the teaching and learning departments to provide professional development direct coaching consultation and professional learning for school leaders instructional coaches and teachers to build internal capacity for personalized learning practices.
- Teacher Coaching & Training: Provide ongoing coaching and professional development to teachers focusing on competencybased teaching practices personalized learning strategies and formative assessment.
- Conduct regular staff evaluations and foster a culture of growth and shared leadership.
- Leverage Best Practices: Facilitate learning networks and communities of practice across schools to share best practices and accelerate innovation.
Data Systems and Technology Integration
- InterDepartmental Collaboration: Collaborate with curriculum and instruction digital teaching and learning assessment/data and technology departments to ensure infrastructure supports studentcentered learning (e.g. digital portfolios mastery tracking systems).
- Data Informed DecisionMaking: Use data to inform continuous improvement cycles monitor student progress and evaluate program impact.
- Innovation: Identify and leverage innovative tools and platforms that enhance personalized and competencybased instruction.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Public Relations and Community Engagement: Foster strong relationships with parents guardians students and the broader community to cocreate learning experiences that reflect learner voice and choice and support student learning and wellbeing.
- Serve as the chief ambassador for Weber Innovation High School by actively promoting the schools model to internal and external stakeholders
- Communicate the benefits and goals of personalized learning to families and engage them in their childs learning process.
- Organize and lead informational tours for prospective students and their families.
- Build strong relationships with local middle schools high schools and higher education institutions to increase awareness and enrollment.
- Oversee marketing social media and public outreach efforts to communicate the schools vision and successes.
- Represent the school/district at local state and national levels advocating for personalized competencybased education and seeking out opportunities for collaboration and funding.
- Liaison & Networking: Serve as a liaison with external organizations research partners community and business partners and professional networks to inform best practices and bring resources to the district.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- Masters degree in Education Curriculum & Instruction Educational Leadership Educational Technology or related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in K12 education including roles in teaching instructional leadership and school or districtlevel administration.
- Valid Utah administrative/supervisory license
- Proven leadership in designing and implementing personalized or competencybased learning models at the school or district level.
Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Deep understanding of personalized learning competencybased education mastery grading and performance assessments.
- Demonstrated ability to build and sustain a PCBL model secondary school.
- Strong ability to lead systems change in complex educational environments.
- Expertise in instructional design professional learning and adult learning theory.
- Exceptional communication collaboration promotion and project management skills.
- Commitment to equity cultural responsiveness and inclusive educational practices.
