Job Description

Position Title: Assistant Band Director

Department: School

Reports To: Band Director/Principal

FLSA Status: NonExempt

SUMMARY

Assists the Band Director with directing and managing the overall program of instrumental music and marching band for the assigned school. Provides students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensures compliance with all state and district requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists with directing the school instrumental performances including marching band orchestra concert band jazz band soloists and ensembles.
  • Provides for band participation at extracurricular events including concerts football games pep rallies parades and community events.
  • Assists with organizing and implementing band trips in accordance with district policy and regulations as well as student interest and ability. Assists with arranging transportation lodging and meals for outoftown events.
  • Complies with federal and state laws State Board of Education rules MSHSAA rules and Board of Education policies.
  • Supports band booster club activities.
  • Assists with organizing and conducting tryouts for the band; informs administration and participants of final selections.
  • Plans rehearses and assists with directing musical experiences for the school and community with a minimum of twelve evening performances per school year.
  • Attends and assists with afterschool band practice and with band camp.
  • Cooperates with the school administration in assisting to provide music programs for school productions graduation ceremonies and as appropriate civic functions that enhance the students performing experience.
  • Helps with preparing students gathering required documents and assists with making arrangements for District and State auditions and competitions.
  • Assists with maintaining an accurate inventory of schoolowned instruments. Controls the storage and use of schoolowned equipment and materials; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
  • Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies activities materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical social and emotional development of students.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED is required. Experience in working with school bands preferred.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists with managing all marching band students.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read analyze and interpret professional journals technical procedures and instructional manuals. Ability to design and write professional development plans reports and data entry procedures. Ability to effectively present professional development and training and respond to questions from groups of educators trainees media administrators and organization members.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in units of measurement using whole numbers common fractions and decimals. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and in the display and interpretation of data. Ability to apply basic concepts of statistical analysis fractions percentages ratios and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to interpret and carry out instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work related issues and problems.

Ability to identify student adjustment and/or academic problems provide counseling and/or recommend appropriate remedial action to parents. Ability to provide instruction to ESOL students through explanation demonstration and/or supervised practice. Ability to supervise students and maintain order in various classroom and instructional activities and situations. Recognizes and follows the appropriate procedures in the chain of command as designated by board policies and/or administrative procedures.

Presents a positive image of the District at all times.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Ability to operate a personal computer and related software. Knowledge in the methods for developing classroom activities which stimulate learning. Knowledge of counseling methods necessary for handling student academic and adjustment problems. Knowledge of the materials and information which must be prepared for classroom instructional activities.

Ability to develop effective working relationships with students and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to develop effective working relationships with staff and district employees. Ability to implement a flexible work schedule to meet the reporting deadlines. Ability to perform duties with a high level of detail and accuracy. Ability to selfmonitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Ability to perform duties required to assist with the marching band program including but not limited to the ability to withstand the physical demands of outdoor rehearsals and performances exposure to sun heat cold and inclement weather. Ability to assist with frequent heavy lifting and/or moving of large equipment.

Ability to perform duties required to assist with the marching band program including but not limited to the ability to withstand the physical demands of outdoor rehearsals and performances exposure to sun heat cold and inclement weather. The noise level in this environment is loud depending upon the activity in the particular part of the day. Frequent District and occasional statewide travel. Frequent interruptions and immediate attention to unexpected situations are expected.

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually according to Board policy.
