Job Description

REPORTS TO: Site Principal and Director of Special Education

SALARY SCHEDULE: 260/R9

WORK YEAR: 10 Months

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under immediate supervision of certificated staff assists in conducting intensified positive learning experiences for students in assigned areas of study; performs a variety of clerical and supportive tasks for certificated personnel; and provides assistance as well as health care services to students with identified special health needs. Responsible to the Site Principal or Administrative Designee and Director of Special Education and Credentialed School Nurse for student health services.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist certificated personnel with the preparation and presentation of learning materials and instruction; E
  • Tutor students individually or in small groups to reinforce and followup with learning activities; E
  • Monitor and assist in administration of student testing and scores tests as directed;
  • Oversee and supervise students with physical and mental challenges during classroom activities in nonacademic settings and during other educational experiences; E
  • Provide additional assistance for delivery of health services as needed; E
  • Perform on a daily basis special physical health care services such as; assisting with noninstructional activities including: clothing (i.e. buttoning pulling up/down pants zipping zippers etc. eating toileting diaper changing handoverhand instruction with oral and personal hygiene handoverhand instruction with feminine hygiene administer medications (oral topical eye drops nebulizer treatments diastat administration) per Education Code Section 49423 wheelchair assistance and perform lifting or other physical tasks as assigned and maintain related supplies and equipment; E
  • May be required to provide assistance to the credentialed school nurse with catheterization oral or tracheotomy suctioning as well as percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and Gtube insertion;
  • Assist the credentialed school nurse in establishing and maintaining daily documentation of school health records with respect to logging of the administration of health services which may include documentation of accidents/incidents; E
  • Participate as a screener for pediculosis at school sites;
  • May work in a variety of locations within the District;
  • Perform a variety of regular clerical duties such as filing typing or duplicate materials; E
  • Maintain student records attendance and health files;
  • Operate a variety of instructional tools utilizing modern technology and office equipment; E
  • Maintain discipline in the absence of the teacher;
  • Perform Health/Instructional Assistant I duties;
  • Maintain records of materials and equipment as directed;
  • Assist in analyzing demonstrating and explaining basic skills knowledge and strategies in formal sports and fundamentals of body movement;
  • Maintain a safe positive and appropriate learning environment;
  • Use positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist students in the development of appropriate behavior. E
  • Must participate in District inservice training and professional learning; E
  • May direct the Health/Instructional Assistant I.

E Essential function

JOB REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Possess and maintain a current First Aid and CPR certification for adult and child;
  • Possess current seizure training prior to the start of the assignment;
  • Diastat administration training if applicable prior to the start of the assignment per Education Code Section 49423;
  • Possess current Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI) training prior to the start of the assignment;
  • Knowledge of Universal Precautions regarding bloodborne pathogens;
  • Any combination of training and education that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities;
  • Knowledge of biohazard waste disposal prior to the start of the assignment;
  • Knowledge of their duty and responsibility as a mandated reporter.

Licenses Certifications and Testing:

  • Preemployment physical and drug test;
  • A current and valid Tuberculosis (TB) clearance;
  • Fingerprint clearance for school personnel;
  • Must possess a valid California driver license during the course of employment and be insurable by the Districts liability insurance carrier;
  • Pass a District test with a score of 80 or better.
  • Good physical condition as determined by pre and postemployment inquiries and health report.

Knowledge and skills of:

  • General concepts of child growth and development and child behavior characteristics;
  • Positive techniques used in managing and motivating students;
  • English usage punctuation spelling grammar and math;
  • Routine record keeping;
  • General purposes and goals of public education;
  • Specific subject area content as required in job assignment;
  • Safety rules and regulations regarding physical activity;
  • Student testing and testing procedure;
  • Procedures/techniques related to first aid and equipment utilized for physical health care;
  • Universal Precautions and bloodborne pathogens;
  • Standard office equipment and computer applications including Microsoft Office and Google Drive environments;
  • Modern office methods procedures and equipment including record keeping principles methods and procedures filing systems letter and report writing;
  • Interpersonal skills using tact patience and courtesy.

Ability to:

  • Work effectively on a daily basis with students with special needs by performing such tasks as feeding clothing (i.e. buttoning pulling up/down pants zipping zippers etc. toileting diaper changing handoverhand instruction with personal hygiene as well as handoverhand instruction with feminine hygiene vomit soiled clothing and/or articles moving students to/from the floor changing tables and wheelchairs; assist in lifting students from wheelchairs and/or adaptive equipment (i.e. hydraulic harness lift and hydraulic table lift etc.;
  • Administer medication adhering to Education Code Section 49423;
  • Perform on a daily basis health care procedures as assigned and maintain health care equipment that fall under State and Federal guidelines;
  • Supervise and take responsibility for the safety and welfare of children with special needs;
  • Meet the lifting and physical requirements of the job;
  • Ability to learn and perform procedures related to specialized physical health care services;
  • Learn and utilize basic methods and procedures to be followed in instructional setting;
  • Performs routine clerical work and basic arithmetical calculations;
  • Demonstrate an understanding patient warm positive and receptive attitude toward children;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students staff parents and the general public;
  • Understand and use English in both verbal and written form employing correct spelling grammar punctuation and vocabulary;
  • Plan and organize work and effectively maintain work schedules;
  • Work with deadlines and under pressure;
  • Maintain the confidentiality and security of sensitive information;
  • Analyze situations identify needs prioritize solve problems independently as appropriate and take appropriate action in a variety of procedural matters without immediate supervision;
