Job Description

Primary Purpose

The Opportunity Programs Career Coach and Benefits Navigator plays a vital role in supporting individuals facing barriers to education and employment. This position provides personalized career coaching job readiness training and comprehensive benefits navigation through the statewide SNAP Training and Employment Program (STEP) grant House Bill 2835 and Basic Needs Oregon grant funding.


By equipping students with essential workforce skills and connecting them to public benefits and community resources this role helps reduce financial hardships and promotes longterm economic stability. Through oneonone coaching group workshops and partnerships with service providers the Career Coach and Benefits Navigator empowers participants to achieve selfsufficiency and career success.

Description of Essential Functions

Program Outreach 40 of Time)

  1. Collaborate and communicate with Opportunity Programs staff campus departments and community agencies to enhance outreach efforts for STEP and Benefits Navigation expand access to support services and build partnerships with campus and local organizations social service agencies and workforce development programs.
  2. Serve as a primary liaison with communitybased organizations social service providers and workforce development partners to develop sustainable outreach pipelines and referral networks. Design and manage promotional strategies create outreach materials and provide informational sessions.
  3. Coordinate and actively participate in campus and community resource fairs to promote campus student services and community supports and service providers. Engage attendees by providing informational materials answering questions and facilitating referrals to career development and benefits resources.
  4. Travel between Coos and Curry campuses as needed to administer and advertise STEP and Benefits Navigation services.
Program Support 40 of Time)
  1. Provide enhanced case management and support for STEP participants: oneonone coaching to assist STEP participants in setting education and career goals engage consistent contact and followup with students to assess retention and ongoing needs.
  2. Support students in navigating complex public assistance systems including SNAP TANF childcare subsidies and housing assistance. Interpret and communicate eligibility criteria assist with documentation when appropriate and coordinate with agency partners to resolve issues. Maintain expertise in public benefit programs and translate this knowledge into direct student support and institutional resource development.
  3. Attend project staff meetings and engage in the planning and evaluation of coaching/support strategies and other activities related to STEP and Benefits Navigation.
Record Keeping 20 of Time)
  1. Maintain detailed accurate records and documentation in alignment with state and federal program compliance requirements ensuring timely reporting and full compliance with program guidelines and requirements.
  2. Track student progress service delivery metrics and benefit referrals using institutional systems and standardized protocols. Prepare reports and data summaries to support grant compliance institutional planning and program evaluation efforts. Ensure confidentiality and compliance with FERPA and other applicable regulations.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Associates degree in sociology psychology human services education or related field.


At least one 1 year of relative experience preferably in career coaching case management academic advising education or resource navigation.

  • Demonstrated experience working compassionately and effectively with individuals from diverse cultural socioeconomic and ability backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite word processing data entry and the ability to quickly adapt to new digital tools and database systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of career development strategies workforce trends job search techniques public benefits programs financial assistance resources and communitybased support services.
  • Knowledge and understanding of materials techniques and resources necessary to assist students of all ages to overcome barriers and find means to achieve their potential through education.
  • Knowledge of various teaching methods learning styles and group dynamics to effectively engage and support learners.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants for this position possessing one or more of the following knowledge skills and abilities with receive preferred consideration through the selection process.

  • Bachelors degree in a related field.
  • Experience providing enhanced case management and/or academic advising in a college setting.
  • Experience providing traumainformed support to individuals facing barriers to education and employment.
