Description

The following positions are in the Special Design Program and Paraeducators may be reassigned during the year based on student enrollment or other factors:

  • StudentParaeducator Works oneonone individually with a student with disabilities or sometimes more than one student.
  • HOURS PER DAY: 7
  • SCHOOL YEAR POSITION 192 DAYS / 10 MONTHS)
  • ANTICIPATED START DATE:SCHOOL YEAR
  • BenefitsMedical/Dental/Vision through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) are provided for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year.
  • Additional benefits may include vacation sick personal days and paid holidays.
  • Most positions have additional pay provisions above what is represented on the salary schedule all in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreements as negotiated.
  • SALARY: LEVEL 33 on the Paraeducator (formerly Instructional Assistant) Salary Schedule. Responsibilities

  1. Provide instruction in core academic areas designed by the teachers/specialists. Assist the special education teacher/general education teacher in the implementation of the student Individual Education Plan including student accommodations and modifications. Assist the teacher in preparing materials and collecting and recording data.
  2. Participate as a contributing member of a collaborative team. Assist the teacher in implementing behavioral and social skills programs as designed and supervised by certificated staff. Under the supervision of certificated staff implement the district deescalation and softrestraint techniques as needed.
  3. Assist students with physical and mobility needs and personal care. Assist secondary students with prevocational and transition activities. Manage student equipment and assistive technology as needed. Supervise and promote safety of students in multiple settings. Administer monitor and document medication following the District policy/procedures and student health care plan as needed.

Qualifications

  1. Must provide high school diploma (orequivalent) AND 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited college AA or BA degree OR pass an academically rigorous assessment.
  2. Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
  3. Must complete Core Competencies within one year if hired into aParaeducator position (refer to theESS Collective Bargaining Agreement).
  4. Demonstrated interest in working with students with a broad range of disabilities.
  5. One year of successful work experience training or school district experience with students or adults with disabilities preferred.
  6. Ability to respond appropriately to aggressive and physical behaviors.
  7. Have successfully completed or be willing to complete the District deescalation/soft restraint training. Must demonstrate initial competency level as measured by instructor observation.
  8. Willing and physically capable of kneeling bending and working or sitting on the floor with students; running after students based on student needs.
  9. Provide personal care assistance to students including but not limited to feeding tube feeding (with training) toileting and diapering based on student needs. Must pass the District strength and agility screening test when necessary and based on student needs.
  10. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Heavier lifting will utilize a twoperson lift or assistive devices.
  11. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students teachers parents and administrators in a positive professional and confidential manner.
  12. Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  13. Demonstrated ability to follow directions carry out routines and implement interventions as directed by certificated staff or supervisors.
  14. Basic computer skills required.
  15. Proficiency in basic communication skills and ability to see hear and listen to the teacher and students throughout the classroom or school settings in order to supervise and maintain a safe environment for a diverse group of students.
  16. Must have access to reliable transportation.
