ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

Founded in 1965 the ChineseAmerican Planning Council Inc. (CPC) aims to promote the social and economic empowerment of Chinese American immigrant and lowincome communities. Today CPC is the nations largest Asian American social services agency and offers more than 50 programs at over 35 sites throughout New York City including early childhood education schoolage care youth services workforce development community services and senior services. CPC strives to be the premier social service and leadership development organization. In 2017 CPC launched Advancing Our CommUNITY its organizationwide strategy to expand services to address persistent needs and emerging trends and to improve leadership skills among staff and community members. In 2022 our core programs and emergency services reached 200000 people living in all five boroughs and all 51 city council districts. In the summer of 2022 CPC was recognized as the number one Chinese American organization in New York City to recommend to a Chinese immigrant looking for inlanguage and culturally competent resources according to a recent survey. CPC School Age Child Care (SACC) Programs are after school and summer programs that serve approximately students from grades K5 each year (ages 512. The goal of the program is to support students in all learning areas including intellectual academic physical social and emotional growth. The program offers creative and structured activities to strengthen participants academic skills and incorporates the disciplines of science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) in a variety of projects as well as art and physical activities. SACC Programs generally operate on weekdays from 2:00 pm 6:00 pm with possible evenings weekends and school holidays at the following campuses:

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the onsite Program Director Youth Counselors (formerly known as Youth Workers) support Group Leaders and the onsite Program Director in the development implementation and evaluation of SACC agedappropriate enrichment activities tutoring as well as participants supervision. Youth Counselors are expected to model relationship building skills by maintaining positive relationships with children parents CPC staff and school personnel.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Group Leader to develop and implement engaging academic enrichment and recreational activities fulfilling DYCD goals for STEM or Literacy.
  • Assist the Group Leader to implement the tools for evaluating effectiveness of activities and events.
  • Review program plans with Education Specialist and Group Leader for effective implementation.
  • Tutor and assist participants in schoolwork.
  • Assure that activities are ageappropriate and safe.
  • Assure that the participants are properly supervised in a safe environment.
  • Maintain a high level of communication and positive relationship with the school principal school staff after school staff and parents via meetings.
  • Maintain positive relationships with children parents staff and school management demonstrating model relationship building skills in all interactions.
  • Comply with the program policies procedures and regulations set forth by DOH DYCD and CPC.
  • Participate in staff training opportunities for professional growth.
  • Perform any other related duties as outlined by the Group Leader and Program Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • At least 1 year of experience working with children ages 5 through 12 years old

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong social and emotional maturity and behavioral management skills
  • Knowledge of the principles of positive youth development
  • Bilingual in Chinese (Mandarin and/or Cantonese) preferred

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS OVERVIEW

  • $16.50 $18.00 per hour; hours may vary
  • CPC offers eligible temporary staff members mandatory benefits including paid New York State sick time
