An exciting opportunity is available for an EducationFocused Associate Lecturer to contribute to the School of BioSciences firstyear biology program. In this role you will engage in teaching activities such as delivering classes marking assessments supporting students and contributing to curriculum development.

You will play a key role in coordinating practical or workshop streams and collaborating with the firstyear teaching team under the guidance of the program coordinator. Your teaching will be informed by evidencebased approaches with a strong focus on educational research and continuous improvement.

The role has a 60 teaching 20 educational research and 20 service allocation with a focus on delivering highquality studentcentred education. You will also have the opportunity to engage with the academic community through initiatives such as the BioSciences Research and Innovation in Teaching Effectiveness (BRITE) group or the Teaching and Learning Committee.

This position will focus on firstyear biology for the first five years with potential to expand into other areas of teaching depending on your expertise and the needs of the School after this time.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Deliver different class formats (seminars tutorials practicals field trips and workshops) across the firstyear biology program and other programs as directed by the School Work Load Allocation Committee
  • Contribute to the administrative load associated with the firstyear program as directed by the relevant subject coordinator. This includes responding to student queries posting and updating of online materials etc
  • Contribute to the development of curriculum and subject / course materials
  • Contribute to the development marking and compilation of assessments including assignments and examinations
  • Implement current best practice in approaches to teaching and assessment and be responsive to evidencebased research and feedback on these practices

You may be a great fit if:
You are a committed and engaging educator with experience of teaching biology at the tertiary level witha commitment to inclusivity in student learning and the ability to work collaboratively with students.

You will possess extensive organisational skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills including a demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

You must also have:

  • Graduate Certificate of University Teaching or equivalent formal teaching training
  • Experience teaching biology at the tertiary level in an independent capacity (must be in a position of more authority than a demonstrator)
  • Sound knowledge of introductory level biology
  • Evidence of expertise in a specific area of biology as demonstrated by completion of a PhD in a relevant field of biology
  • Excellent communication skills in English including the capacity to explain material plainly and helpfully
  • Ability to improvise and adapt to new demands including exploring and implementing different teaching methods

Your new team School of BioSciences
The School of BioSciences is the home to over 60 research groups 5 Research Centres 160 academic staff and 240 Research Higher Degree students. Research in the School covers a wide range of topics from discovery to biotechnology with strengths in ecology and evolution marine biology microbial biology genetics and genomics animal behaviour biosecurity and pest management reproductive biology systems biology biological pollution and botany. The School is the home to the University of Melbournes first year biology program which serves 2500 students each year feeding into the Bachelor of Science the Bachelor of Biomedical Science and Environmental Science. Majors of the Bachelor of Science taught through BioSciences are: genetics plant science zoology ecology and evolution marine biology and biotechnology.
