What Drives You
The Virginia Department of Transportation is searching for individuals driven by safety to support state traffic operations throughout the Wise Residency.
The Bristol District Sign Crew is seeking an individual to install maintain repair and remove roadway signs and traffic control devices for assigned area(s). Perform a combination of skilled equipment operations preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance.
As a Sign Crew Operator you will:
respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
attend work zone training prepare work zones and perform traffic control
demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards make suggestions for improvement wear proper personal protection equipment maintain current knowledge of safety rules regulations laws and use equipment properly and safely
participate as a working team member performing manual labor including clearing drainage cutting brush pothole patching concrete pipe replacement and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
complete pretrip inspections perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

Minimum Qualifications
Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
Skill in mathematics used in carpentry and calculating distance.
Experience in work zone setup traffic controls and flagging to include using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) or similar regulations.
Ability to maintain records and complete simple paperwork.
Valid drivers license.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of light medium and heavyduty equipment used in routine and emergency maintenance operations.
Skill in general carpentry.
Safety shoes required.
Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL
equipment.
Additional Considerations
Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety.
Inventory experience.
Basic Tree Cutting & Chainsaw Operator.
Experience in roadway sign installation maintenance and repair.
CPR with AED Standard First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course.
Experience in work zone setup traffic controls and flagging to include using the MUTCD or similar regulations
