Career and Technical Education (CTE) Construction Technology Teacher

Job Summary:

The Utica City School District is seeking a highly skilled and experienced CTE Construction Technology Teacher to provide students with the knowledge and handson skills needed for careers in the construction trades carpentry masonry plumbing and building systems. The ideal candidate will design and deliver an industryaligned curriculum that prepares students for entrylevel construction jobs apprenticeships or postsecondary technical programs. The program will emphasize safety blueprint reading construction materials tool use and structural building techniques.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum Development:Develop and implement a comprehensive curriculum aligned with New York State CTE standards and industry best practices.

Teach students foundational and advanced concepts in:

  • Construction safety and OSHA standards (OSHA 30 Construction Certification preparation).
  • Carpentry and framing techniques for residential and commercial structures.
  • Blueprint reading and construction math for estimating and layout work.
  • Masonry and concrete work including bricklaying cement mixing and finishing.
  • Plumbing basics including pipe fitting drainage systems and fixture installation.
  • Electrical systems fundamentals covering wiring circuits and power tools.
  • Green building technologies and energy efficiency.
  • Utilize projectbased learning and realworld construction projects to enhance student understanding.
  • Teach students how to properly use hand tools power tools measuring instruments and heavy equipment.

HandsOn Training & Lab/Workshop Management:

  • Oversee a stateoftheart construction lab/workshop ensuring tools equipment and materials are maintained.
  • Conduct demonstrations and handson practice in carpentry masonry plumbing and general construction.
  • Ensure compliance with workplace safety standards including proper tool handling and protective equipment use.
  • Guide students through mock job sites construction projects and realworld building tasks.

Student Career Preparation & Certification Readiness:

  • Prepare students for industryrecognized certifications such as:
  • OSHA 30 Certification
  • NCCER Core Construction Certification
  • Residential Carpentry or Building Trades Certifications
  • Forklift or Scaffolding Safety Certifications (if applicable)
  • Guide students through resume building job interview preparation and career exploration in construction trades.
  • Assist students in obtaining internships apprenticeships or cooperative work experiences with local construction companies and trade unions.
  • Mentor students interested in continuing education in construction management civil engineering or skilled trade programs.

Industry & Community Engagement:

  • Develop partnerships with local construction firms trade unions and technical colleges to enhance student learning opportunities.
  • Coordinate guest speakers field trips and job shadowing experiences with industry professionals.
  • Stay current with construction industry trends building codes and technology advancements to ensure students receive uptodate training.

Classroom & Program Management:

  • Maintain accurate records of student progress attendance and assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with New York State Education Department (NYSED) and CTE program requirements.
  • Foster an inclusive engaging and handson learning environment that encourages student success.
  • Assist in recruiting students for the CTE construction program and promoting careers in the skilled trades.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Industry Experience: A minimum of two years of professional experience in carpentry masonry general construction or related trades.
  • Education:
  • A journeyman or masterlevel trade certification is preferred.
  • An associate or bachelors degree in construction technology building trades or a related field is a plus.
  • Candidates with a high school diploma and significant industry experience may qualify for a Transitional A Certificate.
  • Certification: Willingness to obtain or maintain a New York State CTE teaching certification (districtsupported professional development available).

Technical & Teaching Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of construction systems building codes and safety regulations.
  • Proficiency in using and teaching construction tools blueprint reading and CAD software (if applicable).
  • Excellent classroom management communication and instructional skills.
  • Ability to mentor and inspire students to pursue careers in the construction industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior teaching training or apprenticeship supervision experience.
  • Experience with green construction techniques energyefficient building systems or smart home technology is a plus.

The Utica City School District serves a community of approximately 64500 city residents in an urban and multi cultural environment with a current enrollment of roughly 9644 students in its 13 schools Proctor High School Donovan Middle School JFK Middle School and 10 elementary schools. The Districts greatest asset is its diversity with more than 50 languages spoken and 16 of students being English language learners.

Elementary The Districts elementary schools integrate a vibrant curriculum across all grade levels and subject areas aligning with the New York State Learning Standards. Middle School The focus at the Districts middle schools is to ensure that students are provided with equitable opportunities to successfully transition from elementary to high school. Both middle schools offer opportunities for students to succeed at every learning level with dedicated classes for English Language Learners and students with disabilities as well as honors/advanced studies. The Family and Career Sciences and Technology programs have incorporated science technology engineering and math topics into each curriculum to help prepare students for the Career and Technical Education opportunities available at the high school.

High School Proctor High School provides numerous avenues for students to achieve the Districts vision. This is accomplished through supportive and adaptive special education and English language learner programming a robust honors and Advanced Placement curriculum and partnerships with postsecondary institutions including Mohawk Valley Community College and Syracuse Universitys Project Advance. The District most recently embarked upon a groundbreaking initiative working with community and business partners to create innovative Career and Technical Education programming for its high school students. Proctors Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp (NJROTC) music art and drama programs along with numerous extracurricular activities and athletics offer additional avenues to showcase students talents and interests and support them throughout their school experience.

$42086$801845 (without a Masters Degree)

$45011$95002 (with a Masters Degree)
