REPORTS TO: Sr. Administrator of Nursing

SALARY:

WORK SCHEDULE: 8/hr day schedule to be determined Sr. Nursing Administrator

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Promotes student health by supporting daytoday management of the school health program. Assists with developing staff and collaborating with community providers. Supports Principals/Teachers in general education Special Education Supervisors and Athletic Director in the management of medical needs of all students. Supports completion of Department of Public Health mandated reports.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

POSITION DUTIES:

  • Work autonomously in departmental managerial tasks as the 2nd line supervisor
  • Assists the Senior Nurse Administrator with developing division wide standardized procedures for the health care of all students.
  • Supports the development of written policies and protocols for the clinical services and programs addressing health issues in school (e.g. immunizations medication administration services for children with special health care needs emergency response/AED)
  • Backup Medication Manager (RN) with their MCSR application(s) for the MDPH Medication Administration Registration Application. In the event the primary Medication Manager (RN) leaves their position or steps down from this registration the backup Medication Manager (RN) on this application can immediately fill in as the primary Medication Manager (RN) without lapse of registration.
  • Coordinate and provide ongoing continuing education /professional development programs pertinent to the evolving specialty area of school health and school nursing practice as well as meet the continuing education requirements for DESE school nurse licensure in Massachusetts.
  • Oversee orientation programming for new nursing personnel implementing school health services. (RN LPN CNA)
  • Plan organize and direct health program services and activities including communicable disease prevention mandated health services medication administration program and school nursing.
  • Conducts grant initiatives collaborating with pertinent school staff to improve school health services. Attends mandatory CSHS meetings as assigned.
  • Assists with monthly and yearly status reports state mandated reports and additional departmental reports as designated by Sr. Nurse administrator.
  • Oversee training and implementation of the Medicaid billing expansion program.
  • Assess supervise and conduct performance evaluations on nursing staff.
  • Maintains the school health Electronic Health Record (EHR) System. Monitors software utilization documentation and updates for data management.
  • Supports Principal/Teachers/Special Education Supervisor in the Low Incidence Programs with management of medical needs.
  • Coordinator of American Heart Training Center requirements for instructors: Monitors for compliance of TCF and AHA instructors teach instructor classes needed and track equipment
  • Monitors mandated medical drills AED units and consumable AED supplies for the district
  • Manage the Springfield Public Schools Nurse led immunization clinic and DPH Vaccine for Childrens compliance requirements. Functions as access administrator to the Massachusetts Immunization Information System MIIS and the Virtual gateway for Springfield public schools nurses and the nurse managed clinic staff.
  • Responsible for daily staffing of school nurses and Health Assistants for the district due to call outs and FMLAs.
  • Supervises the activities of nursing staff (RN LPN) who are engaged in planning and prioritizing care for students and schools focusing on strategies that will promote optimal health. Completes nursing competencies as needed.
  • Monitors clinical activity staff productivity reporting requirements and the efficiency and effectiveness of the services provided. Initiates process improvement studies to measure the outcomes and evaluate services. Makes recommendations to improve the quality of services provided.
  • Communicates and holds assigned staff accountable to policies/procedures. Provides leadership using effective organizational skills systematic problem solving and communication skills (verbal/written).
  • Provides input into the development implementation and evaluation of program goals with district and community partners. Prioritizes goals so that they are consistent with student health care/administration needs.
  • Monitors school nursing DESE licensure status.
  • Communicates collaborates networks with and acts as a consultant to other members of the administrative team within and outside Springfield Public Schools.
  • Facilitates a positive work environment which supports staff and encourages professional growth. Guides mentors motivates acts as resource.
  • Attend monthly meetings with Sr Nurse Administrator school physician and Athletic Trainers School Nurse Specialists and Team Leaders to collaborate in developing and implementing school health services and aligned practices.
  • Support summer school and vacation school nursing needs
  • Works collaboratively with Sr. Nurse Administrator.
  • Additional duties as assigned by Sr. Nurse Administrator

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Massachusetts Registered Nurse License
  • RN with greater than 5years school nurse experience
  • BSN degree required; masters degree preferred
  • DESE Professional Licensure required as a School Nurse
  • DESE Supervisor/Director Licensure required
  • Current BLS CPR and First Aid certification
  • Current CPR Instructor Training Center Faculty preferred

KNOWLEDGE and ABILITIES:

  • Solid foundational understanding of the nursing laws regulations and standard of practice and SPS school policies and procedures.
  • Ability to develop and write reports policies and correspondence
  • Ability to handle common inquiries or complaints
  • Ability to respond to questions from students faculty staff and visitors
  • Fluency in utilization of SNAP EHR program and Microsoft office computer software
  • Ability to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to exercise good clinical judgment and focus on detail as required by the job
  • Ability to maintain wellorganized materials files systems and tools
  • Ability to adapt to changes in work situations and priorities
  • Ability to reason/analyze; use logic to identify and resolve problems
  • Ability to establish and maintain constructive and cooperative interpersonal relationships with staff peers supervisors or managers in the work unit and other departments as well as with staff of outside entities and other individuals as applicable to the essential duties and responsibilities
  • Knowledge of communicable disease prevention and infection control based to carry out current guidelines for standard precautions prevention of blood borne pathogen exposure and hazardous medical waste disposal
  • Promote positive linkages and referral mechanisms to community providers
  • Possess strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to work cooperatively with parents community partners and school personnel.

No lifting bending or twisting restrictions.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

This position requires the employee to be in an office or similar indoor environment. Requires ability to travel amongst Springfield public schools locations.
