We are seeking a strategic leader with investigations and supervisory experience to join Occupational Health and Safety Program Delivery within the Safe Fair and Healthy Workplaces Division as the Manager of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
Reporting to the Director of Investigations the SIU Manager leads a team of professionals responsible for all nonincident related investigations under Albertas Occupational Health and Safety legislation. This position is responsible for a team of Lead Investigators Disciplinary Action Investigators Technical Advisors Team Leads and an Investigations Assistant with oversight of Disciplinary Action Complaints Investigation Resolutions and nonincident related investigations taking place across the province including chronic or egregious noncompliance and human trafficking.
The Investigations Manager liaises with internal and external stakeholders including staff OHS Compliance other enforcement agencies the Alberta Labor Relations Board and Specialized Prosecutions with the Ministry of Justice where charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act are pursued.
To be successful in this role the successful candidate must possess the following skills:
- Strong ability to interpret and apply legislation providing support advice and quality assurance reviews on complex investigations.
- Expertise regarding a full range of investigative and regulatory enforcement functions including adjudication scene and evidence management taking statements and recommendation for prosecutions.
- Demonstrated supervisory or management experience and excellent change management coaching and mentorship capability.
- Experience with building and refining new programs and operational policy.
- Exceptional relationshipbuilding and communications skills including excellent listening writing and organizational skills.

Qualifications
Education:
- A university degreein a field related to the position (e.g. Political Science Labour Relations Social Sciences Communications Public Policy and Economics) supplemented by a minimum of four years experience working in policy and legislative development preferably labour relations and/or other related employment legislation. Related experience with investigations and interpretation/application of legislation and Policy is required. Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience mentoring and coaching individuals is also required.
Equivalencies:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education and vice versa
Other Requirements:
- Ability to obtain Peace Officer appointment under the Alberta Peace officer Act.
Experience working with labour relations legislation is may be considered.
Assets:
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Legislation
- Knowledge of Courtroom Procedure and Laws of Evidence
- Previous experience with preparation of court briefs
- Experience with contract procurement
- Experience with project management
- Experience with adjudication
