The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our South Puget Sound Region as a Forest Practices Forester Natural Resource Specialist 3 (NRS3. Do you have a passion for environmental protection Do you want to be a part of making Washington a place that has a sustainable future with fish wildlife clean water and a viable timber industry The Forest Practices Forester position supports the mission through the Departments role in implementing the Forest Practices Act on private state and local government forestlands. We are seeking to fill two positions one in the Narrows North Unit and one in the Hood Canal Unit. Narrows North includes Kitsap County and the Gig Harbor area within Pierce County and Vashon/Maury Island within King County. Hood Canal includes the Shelton Matlock and Lake Cushman areas of Mason County. If you enjoy working independently while collaborating with other experts including diverse landowners foresters consultants loggers wildlife biologists geologist engineers and local government entities to protect natural resources and educating landowners consultants and loggers about forest practices and enforcement of the Forest Practices Act the Forest Practices Field Forest position might be a great fit for you!

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Review and approve condition or deny Forest Practices Applications/Notifications.
  • Compliance with Forest Practices Activities.
  • Rule interpretation preapplication reviews.
  • Facilitate Interdisciplinary Teams of natural resource professionals.
  • Participate in training and professional development.
  • Creating and maintaining respectful working relationships.
  • Thinking critically and strategically while also meeting deadlines.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • An associates degree in forestry or a related field; AND four years of professional forestry experience;
    OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Experience with GPS technology and GIS mapping products.
  • Experience with computer applications such as Microsoft Word Excel and Outlook.
  • Skills in verbal and written communication.
  • Skills working as a team lead and member.
  • Tact and Diplomacy with customerfocused skills.
  • Dedication to a Safe Workplace.
  • Commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity equity inclusion and environmental justice practices.
  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Field work 70 is performed on a variety of ownership including large and small forest landowners with parcels over 100 acres to under 20 acres in residential settings and some unimproved natural areas. Incumbent must be able to traverse steep uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Approximately 30 of the work is performed in a typical office setting.
  • Occasional travel for training sessions is necessary.
  • A valid unrestricted drivers license and two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desired Qualifications:
  • A bachelors degree involving major study in Forestry or related natural science and four years of paraprofessional experience in regulatory programs involving forestry.
